US vs UK (#7)

Welcome to Book Passion for Life's seventh US vs UK book cover battle. We've seen this posted on a few other blogs, and thought we'd jump on the band wagon!

The idea of this battle is once a week we'll post 2 sets of books of our choice, one US cover and one UK cover, and we'll just give our opinion on which one we love the most. Which cover captures the story, which one would catch our eye if we saw it on the shelf in a shop. The US cover will be on the left, and the UK cover will be on the right.

So far we've had..... 2 wins, one to the US the other to the UK and 4 draws!

US vs UK Round 7

Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen

 vs

Jess says: Okay so I haven't read this book yet. I had it on my shelf but then I sold it for some stupid reason. I've seen the movie and absolutely LOVED it. Anyway back to the cover. Its a tough one for me, because they're both beautiful. But I find myself leaning more towards the US. Mostly on the basis, that they've kept with the circus theme of the book. With the ring master walking through the curtain, and I love the font on the US, its very circusey (is that a word?), the UK one looks more to me like a romance novel set in another time period, and I just don't feel it 'fits' with the story.
Donna says: This is a good pick. This is a book I've been meaning to check out as I'd love to watch the film but the cover that is prefer is the US cover. I think the UK seems to give off a different real like its set in another time, where as the US even though its a circus feel, could still be a modern book.

Which do you prefer?

The Devouring by Simon Holt

 vs

Jess says: Okay, this is bloody easy. I haven't read this series yet, but I've heard its pretty good and scary. So to the cover...well...I'm giving this to the US. Why? Well its because the UK cover quite frankly scares the beejeezus out of me and gives me the heebie-jeebies. *shudder* I soooo would NOT want this on my bookshelf. So US takes this one for me. BAD UK, bad, bad UK! Well done US, if  I come to reading this book (I may not as I'm not one for scary stuffs), I shall purchase your cover because it's prettier and less likely to give me nightmares.
Donna says: OMG! The UK Cover is HORRIBLE! How scary is that. Lol Yep, I prefer the US, I still don't think that is the best cover I've ever seen but there is no way I would be interested in reading the UK. Gives off a horror vibe of the book. Has anyone read the story?

Which do you prefer?

I have to agree, with these covers, US took the cake, hands down. Although, I must say, the UK version of "Water for Elephants" just seems SO regal and elegant, but I think the US version takes it ONLY because the circus theme plays such a STRONG role in the story. Thanks for sharing with us! :D

Both the US versions win easily in my opinion. They look so much better. But I think the UK version for The Devouring will inspire more boys to read it.

You know I love these posts that you guys do of cover vs cover. I have to chime in here on Water For Elephants though. I haven't seen the movie but I have read the book and I think the US cover is better. The UK cover doesn't seam all the related to the book in fact. The Devouring I haven't read and don't know much about it but the US cover suggests scary angst young adult book, the UK cover suggest the characters in the book will come out of the pages and eat you alive. What the hell!

I prefer both of the US covers .. The Water for Elepants cover seems more adapted to the story.

Agree about both of the books! I actually like both covers of Water for Elephants. I haven't read the book, but I know it's about a circus and the US cover does have a more circus-y feel to it. Especially the font, just like Jess said.

The UK cover for the devouring is just plain creepy... And scary... And would probably give you nightmares... The US cover is nothing remarkable, but it is sooo much better than the creepy UK one!

For both of the books I prefer the US cover. The cover for Water for Elephants just appeals to me more because I've been seeing it practically everywhere, since the movie's coming out. Oh my gosh, the UK cover for The Devouring is so gross! I agree, I wouldn't want that on my shelf! Plus, the US one is so intriguing and much prettier too :)

I'm a dissenter cause I really like the UK cover for Water For Elephants. It may have nothing to do with the story ( have not read it) but I love the color.
