Being a teenager is tough, especially when you have to pretend to be something you’re not, and you’re in love with someone you shouldn’t. 115 years ago, a small planet called Arcadia was invaded by a vicious alien race and nearly destroyed. Cut off from their resources, the Arcadians turned to Earth for help. A group of Arcadian explorers discovered a Prophecy that claimed their salvation lay in the hands of two children from Earth. To ensure their safety, the Arcadian Council sent their most gifted youngsters to Earth to act as protectors. Samantha is one of them.

To succeed in her mission she must learn to control her Arcadian powers and keep her true identity from her best friend, and the girl she swore to protect, Alexia. But Samantha will soon realize that nothing is as it seems. Someone is trying to prevent the Prophecy from taking place and the prophecy boy hasn't been found yet. There is also a new drug circulating at school that is turning students into freakishly strong menaces.

To make matters worse, distractions keep getting in her way. Such as her love/hate relationship with her “cousin” Matthew. Or her confused feelings toward popular and mysterious Julian. She wants nothing more than to be free to live her life. But the survival of Arcadia depends on her and her friends. Free will is not an option.

The Review: 3.5 Flowers!

The Prophecy of Arcadia is a good read and a nice introduction to the Arcadian Wars series. I’m not going to rehash the blurb because it tells you everything you need to know. We start with a prologue from 115yrs ago when a planet is being invaded and someone is sent to put a plan into action, all hope is placed in this plan and a prophecy is born… fast forward to present day where we meet Alexia, Sam & Matthew and the story will be told from each of their POVs, I enjoyed the different viewpoints throughout the book, it kept the story fresh and helped to know things that were going on in different places etc. which was handy also because Alexia is in the dark about her status in the prophecy, so the only way we knew what was going on about that was by the POVs of the people in the know. I liked all of the characters; not just the three who are voiced, there are quite a few who are charged with protecting Alexia and who all live together in one house with a parental figure. Each of these have certain abilities that help them and make them capable of being a guardian and I found it quite interesting and I’m definitely interested in all of their stories. With this being the first book, it is very much a ‘getting to know you’ book and the vast majority of it focussed on the budding relationships between Alexia and her soul mate and also Sam & Matthew and again this is where I enjoyed the differing POVs because we were getting love from both sides of the fence so to speak where one side shouldn’t fall for someone because a soul mate will put an end to any relationship and another where a romance is inadvisable when you’ve been using the ‘cousin’ card because you are undercover and are duty bound to be focussed on other things. This gave both angles a forbidden love feel and they were both sweet but I have to say that Sam & Matthews relationship hit me a lot more than Alexias. Storyline wise, I liked getting to know all of the characters, I liked learning about the protectors powers and that there were ‘prodigies’, they were touched upon but not in great detail so I’m really curious about these people. I liked that Alexia was in the dark about who she was but I wished that she had been told sooner, I liked what started to emerge in her but again, only an smidge of potential that I need to see more of. I thought the story could have done with a lot more action, we had no specific enemy until at least 80% of the way through and whilst I enjoyed getting to know the characters, I needed some action and not just at the end of the book. It was a promising start though and now the cat is partially out of the bag, I look forward to seeing how Alexia deals with her circumstances, how the relationships develop (I have my eye on at least another two possible couples), how the prophecy is going to play out and having a definite bad guy/girl to battle and bring some action & excitement.

New sci-fi romance from the RITA Award nominated author of GHOST PLANET!
* * *
Our world is no longer our own. We engineered a race of superior fighters -- the Manti, mutant humans with insect-like abilities. Twenty-five years ago they all but destroyed us. In Sanctuary, some of us survive. Eking out our existence. Clinging to the past.

Some of us intend to do more than survive.
* * *
Asha and Pax -- strangers and enemies -- find themselves stranded together on the border of the last human city, neither with a memory of how they got there.

Asha is an archivist working to preserve humanity’s most valuable resource -- information -- viewed as the only means of resurrecting their society.

Pax is Manti, his Scarab ship a menacing presence in the skies over Sanctuary, keeping the last dregs of humanity in check.

Neither of them is really what they seem, and what humanity believes about the Manti is a lie.

With their hearts and fates on a collision course, they must unlock each other's secrets and forge a bond of trust before a rekindled conflict pushes their two races into repeating the mistakes of the past.

Excerpt from The Ophelia Prophecy
By Sharon Lynn Fisher

Water pooled around Asha’s hips, soaking her thin cotton dress. She studied the glimmering surface of the lake, and the rocky hillside looming on the opposite side.
The reservoir. How did I get here?
Closing her eyes, she pressed her fingers to her temples. The last thing she remembered was climbing to the roof of the Archive with her father. It was a beautiful spring evening, and they’d planned to picnic and watch the sunset. She’d stepped off the ladder onto the corrugated, white-washed metal, and then . . .
Sleep, Ophelia.
She grasped at the words as they breezed across her consciousness. They had the ring of command, yet she had no memory of who had spoken them, or why.
A masculine moan sounded, so close she rolled into a crouch and skittered into the shallow water. The lithe movement of her own body surprised her almost as much as the unexpected voice.
Just beyond the depression she’d left on the beach, a naked form stirred. A stranger. His gaze riveted on her. He sat up straight, fists digging into the sand. No, not sand. His body rested on a bed of some soft, fibrous material.
She remembered the flimsy dress—now wet and clinging to her body—and hugged her bent legs, concealing herself as best she could. Her heart pounded against her thighs.
“Who are you?” they both demanded.
So the confusion was mutual.
“You first,” he said. A command, not a courtesy.
She hesitated. The man now seemed familiar—something about the eyes. They curved down at the inside corners, making them appear to slant under his dark, arched eyebrows. But she couldn’t place him.
He rose to a crouch, eyes moving over her like an extension of his arms, prying at the locked arms that concealed her body from him.
She reached up to release the clip that held her coiled hair to the back of her head, thinking she would cover herself with it. She gasped to discover her heavy tresses were gone.
Tears of confusion welled in her eyes. Fear knotted her stomach.
“What’s your name?” the stranger insisted.
“Asha,” she whispered, uncertain. There’d been another name a moment ago. A name that had seemed to mean something.
Her throat tightened, strangling her words, as she said, “I don’t understand…”
“What are you doing here?”
She raised her eyes to his face, shrinking from the heat of his gaze. “I don’t know.”
His eyes bored into hers, probing for the thoughts behind them. He frowned, brow furrowing with doubt. He doesn’t believe me.
“Who are you?” she repeated, indignation nudging past the fear that gripped her.
He slid his hands up his shoulders to rub his neck, baring the hard lines of his stomach, revealing pale marks under either side of his ribcage. Scars.
“Paxton,” he said. One hand moved to the back of his head, and he winced. He probed the sore spot with his fingers.
“Why are you here?”
“I don’t know.”
She glanced again at the fibrous nest. “What’s that?”
“Carapace.”
She blinked at him, the meaning of the familiar word eluding her. Before she could question him further, he rose to his feet, scanning the horizon. Her eyes lingered on the marks below his ribs.
He stood so long—motionless and studying the edge of the sky—she began to think he’d forgotten her. His composure was troubling. There was a shared mystery here, clearly, but they were not equal participants.
“How can you be so calm?” she asked, voice lifting with anxiety. “Do you know something I don’t? Has this kind of thing happened to you before?”
Paxton glanced down at the nest. “Yes.”
She gaped at him, but the low whine of an approaching ship changed the subject. Her heart jumped as the black beetle hummed into view, dragging its own reflection across the surface of the lake.
She sprang to her feet. “That’s an enemy ship!” she cried. “We have to go!”
Technically the war was over. Very little left for the Manti to fight. But they still ruled the air, keeping tabs on the last dregs of humanity. Citizens of Sanctuary were forbidden to wander away from the city, and the reservoir marked the border.
Again his eyes skewered her to the spot. “No, we wait here. That’s my ship.”
“Your ship? I don’t…”
She side-stepped a couple meters down the beach, eyeing him fearfully.
Overhead, the beetle whirred to rest, cupped wings lifting to allow a controlled vertical landing. With a series of loud clicks it nestled into the sand, hover gear lowering and locking back against the hull. The lusterless, black skin of the vessel looked like rubber, but she knew it was a secreted resin. As she stared, frozen to the spot, the hull lightened from jet to blond, until it was almost invisible against the sand.
“Pax, you okay?” a feminine voice sounded from the ship’s external com.
“I’m okay,” called Asha’s companion. “Drop the ramp.”
“Who’s that with you?”
Paxton frowned at Asha. “I was hoping you could tell me.”

A Review for The King (Black Dagger Brotherhood #12) by JR Ward

18427989Posted by Donna
Release Date: April 1st, 2014
Finished Date: April 6th, 2014
Publishers: Piatkus
Genre: Adult, Paranormal
Source: For Review
Format: Hardcover
Pages: 573
J.R. Ward's # 1 New York Times bestselling Black Dagger Brotherhood continues as a royal bloodline is compromised by a grave threat to the throne.

Long live the King…

After turning his back on the throne for centuries, Wrath, son of Wrath, finally assumed his father’s mantle--with the help of his beloved mate. But the crown sets heavily on his head. As the war with the Lessening Society rages on, and the threat from the Band of Bastards truly hits home, he is forced to make choices that put everything--and everyone--at risk.

Beth Randall thought she knew what she was getting into when she mated the last pure blooded vampire on the planet: An easy ride was not it. But when she decides she wants a child, she’s unprepared for Wrath’s response--or the distance it creates between them.

The question is, will true love win out... or tortured legacy take over?

The Review: JR Ward has had me completely hooked on her Black Dagger Brotherhood series since I first started reading and now, with the release of book twelve, I’m still completely hooked. I’m glad this series is still going strong! I find myself craving for more the BDB series while I’m waiting for a new release and when I get it, that’s it…I’ve got to read it straight away.

I really loved The King, but there’s so much going on with so many different characters, sometimes it’s a little overwhelming. I really wish JR wouldn’t focus on so many characters at once because it’s easy to lose interest in parts of the story. But here are my thoughts on some of the characters.

Beth and Wrath; I’m so glad we got more of these two. The whole story started with these and I think it was a fantastic idea to go back to them. They’re story never gets old and The King brings so much more to their story. With Beth wanting a young and Wrath knows that’s not for him, it really was gut-wrenching to read their story at times throughout this book.  I was happy with the way things turned out though, what was a sad story turned into something beautiful and full of joy.

King Wrath and Anha; Wrath’s parents story was a great extra to the story. It was fantastic to see the King Wrath’s father was and how much he’d go to protect Anha. It was a beautiful story, but full of heartbreak.

Trez and Selena; I really enjoyed the chapters based on these two. I wasn’t expecting it but it was a pleasant surprise. With Trez being a Shadow trying to unravel his character was fantastic. You just didn’t know what to expect from him and Selena really bought out the good in Trez. He wants to turn his life around but doesn’t believe he’s worthy, especially since he’s tainted himself to stay away from his people. I liked these two together and I’m glad their story isn’t over.

John Matthew; For the past few books, I’ve felt like JR Ward has completely forgotten about John. If you’ve read the series then you already know that there is a secret that no-one knows about John –not even John knows – but I’m so ready for it to come out. Thankfully with The King it seems that it’s possibly on the verge of being revealed, if only someone could figure it out. I think Xhex maybe the best possible person to discover it, if only JR gave more time to John’s secret.

Assail and Sola; I had to think long and hard on these two. I enjoyed their story but I didn’t love it, nor did I see the point in it. Especially when this book is supposed to be about Beth and Wrath but I felt like more time was spent on them. I just didn’t care for their story and wish their parts had been about the rest of the brotherhood.

Xcor and Layla; Finally some progress with these two. I enjoy their scenes together but I’m left questioning so much after the agreement they came too. I honestly have no idea what will happen next.

In all, there were some parts of the The King I didn’t like, but still, no matter what JR does, I still find myself completely mesmerized by the Brotherhood and I’m still dying for more. I’m excited to see what book thirteen will bring and with it being called The Shadow, I think I may just love it!

Thank you to Pitakus for the opportunity to review this book in exchange for an honest review.

This summer, I’d planned to celebrate my eighteenth birthday in Europe with my fellow Manhattanites—Taddy Brill, Blake Morgan, and Vive Farnworth—until I caught my boyfriend screwing my mother. According to the police report, this vomit-inducing incident happened around the same time I’d supposedly blown-up my mother’s penthouse. Like I’m walking around Soho with a stick of dynamite in my Louis Vuitton purse—not! Now, my besties and I are in jail.

Officer Ford Gotti, the Harley-wheelin’ biker cop who arrested us, keeps sticking his perfectly-sculpted nose into my case. His inked body is jacked like a superhero, and he says I can trust him. He wants me to fess up. I won’t. Not again. Why should I? My friends and I had a previous stint in juvie that nearly destroyed us. I gotta protect them and keep my mouth shut. Right?

Excerpt from Chapter Seven: The Ride of My Life

*the set up: Lex and Ford go for a ride on his motorcycle
The bike rolled into the garage and stopped. Ford pushed a button, and the garage lights came on as the door closed. Kicking the stand, he got to his feet and cut the engine.
Mindful of where I sat, he lifted his leg and got off the bike. When he removed his helmet, I noticed his eyes weren’t as dark as before. They had hints of hazel in them. His brow furrowed into a straight line when he caught me staring at him.
Quickly, I looked down at the bike and reached up to take my helmet off.
“Allow me.” His big hands came under my chin. He tilted my jaw upward. “Such a beautiful face, Lex. I like looking at you.”
“Thank you…”
I’d heard the “pretty face but” backhanded compliment my entire life. I waited for him to say, “But your body could use some work.” Or my personal favorite, “It’s a shame you forgot to take care of the rest of you.”
Ford didn’t say anything of the sort. He studied me just as he did back in the jail, from head to toe. I’m so uncomfortable. Not because of anything he’s doing, but because usually that is when men, and sometimes women, stop looking at me all together.
He unfastened my chinstrap and teased, “Let’s see if your hair has static.”
Trying to stand, I laughed nervously.
“Stay seated.” He removed my helmet and placed both his and mine behind me. He swung my right leg to the left side of the bike, framing my body with his. He cupped my face in his hands.
Hot cop fantasy? Heck no. This was real. He was going to…
Ford licked his bottom lip. His facial features strained, becoming serious. The tip of his nose touched mine. I smelled mint when he exhaled. “No roommate. Yup, I live alone.” Then he kissed me.
My head fell back into his grip.
With determination, he tongued me, deeply, clockwise, oh yes even his flippin’ tongue was strong and precise, just like the way he weaved his bike through traffic.
Enthusiastically he unbuttoned the straps on my overalls and then without even looking, still lip-to-lip, he worked the closure on the left side then the right.  The denim flaps fell to the front and the back.
“Stand for a sec.” Ford lifted me up in the air as if I were a weightless feather. He planted both my feet on the ground, and then he shanked the overalls to my ankles.
“Ford—” Before I could finish whatever I was going to say, he lifted up my shirt and swiftly placed me back on the motorcycle. Worried I’d fall, I dug my back into the seat, reached for each handlebar, pulling myself up as I gasped and garbled some words.
He slid his fingers through the purple waistband on my underwear.
My entire body stood to attention.
“I want you naked so I can admire your body, and fuck you, on my bike.”
Air, I needed to breath. Afraid I might pass out, I inhaled through my nostrils and wrapped my arms around his shoulders. “Umm, Ford,” I whispered when he came in to kiss me again.
What the heck was I going to say? “Excuse me, but as hawt as this whole bike thing sounds, my Lady V and I would be more comfortable on a bed, sofa, or even the floor.” I felt as if I might knock the bike over any second now.
“Nervous?” Ford sensed my apprehension.
“Very,” I replied without thinking.
“I told you not to be.” He repositioned himself holding my legs over his right shoulder.
The panties came off. Then he lifted one leg and rested it on his other shoulder. Leaning down, his hands scooped under my back and unfastened my bra. No directions necessary. This dude could do this undressing thing, in the dark.
“But Ford, ya see, I’m—”
That tongue of magic. Thick and velvety, warm and wetter than the spot between my legs, Ford slipped back into my mouth. This time he rotated counterclockwise.
Dang. Ford is an Olympic kisser. For round two, I braced myself in his arms.
Legs spread wide, my ass still sat on the bike.

A Review for The Forever Song (Blood of Eden #3) by Julie Kagawa

VENGEANCE WILL BE HERS

Allison Sekemoto once struggled with the question: human or monster?

With the death of her love, Zeke, she has her answer.

MONSTER

Allie will embrace her cold vampire side to hunt down and end Sarren, the psychopathic vampire who murdered Zeke. But the trail is bloody and long, and Sarren has left many surprises for Allie and her companions—her creator, Kanin, and her blood brother, Jackal. The trail is leading straight to the one place they must protect at any cost—the last vampire-free zone on Earth, Eden. And Sarren has one final, brutal shock in store for Allie.

In a ruined world where no life is sacred and former allies can turn on you in one heartbeat, Allie will face her darkest days. And if she succeeds, triumph is short-lived in the face of surviving forever alone.

The Review: Enthralling, dark and action-packed, The Forever Song is the finale instalment in Julie Kagawa’s Blood of Eden series and gosh, what an ending it was!

After her love Zeke was killed Allison has done the one thing that she said she’d never do. She’s given in to her inner monster and becoming what she is she most fears, just so she doesn’t have to face the pain of losing Zeke. Now on a journey with her sire Kanin and blood brother Jackal to try and stop Sarren from releasing the new virus that will kill everything that walks on the earth. However, Sarren being the true monster he is has left Allison a few surprises on her journey to try and distract her. But can Allison reach Sarren in time before it’s too late?

I feel like I’ve been waiting for The Forever Song for forever, but really it’s only been 3 years. For 3 years we’ve been on the Blood of Eden journey which Julie has created and of course, it was completely amazing. As usual, Julie delivers an epic finale, one that’s unforgettable. Her writing is simply brilliant and even when she’s writing dark stories there’s just something beautiful about her work. She always drags me in from start to finish and whenever I finish a book, I’m left wanting more from her. With quotes like this; "The world went red. Screaming, I leaped down into the middle of the swarm and began laying waste with my katana. Limbs and heads parted for me as I carved my way through the horde. My demon reveled in the chaos and destruction, howling in delight with every body that fell, painting the snow and the cars around me with dark blood." This is the reason Julie is one of my favourite authors!

Allison has come such a long way and I couldn’t be prouder of the person she’s become. She struggles every day but she’s completely committed to do the right thing. It helps that she has people around her that want to help her like Kanin and Zeke – even Jackal in his own twisted way. The relationship between them all really grows though The Forever Song. The bonds they form are touching and loving. They also bring a lot of humour into the story, especially Jackal. I honestly can’t remember how many times I burst out laughing because of the things he says. Simply brilliant!

The plot of the story was fast paced and really entertaining. I was so pleased with the outcome of the story – although sad for one characters future but I could see why things needed to be that way. And honestly, by the end of the story, I still wanted more even though I was completely satisfied as a reader. I definitely believe Jackal could have his own standalone book. I’d love for him to find love and I think it would be really epic to what that happen.

In all, Julie Kagawa has done it again and delivered an epic end to an awesome series. And this makes me even more excited to read Talon.

Favourite Quotes: "Hey, minions! Daddy's home, and he's not happy! But because I'm such a nice guy, I'm going to give you a choice. You can make it easy for yourself and blow your brains out right now, or I can slowly twist your head around until it pops right off your neck. Your move!"

Mariella Teagen hasn't spoken a word in four years.

She pledged her voice to Orane, the man she loves—someone she only sees in her dreams. Each night, she escapes to Paradise, the world Orane created for her, and she sings for him. Mariella never believed she could stay in Paradise longer than a night, but two weeks before her eighteenth birthday, Orane hints that she may be able to stay forever.

Hudson Vincent made a pledge to never fight again.

Calease, the creature who created his dream world, swore that giving up violence would protect Hudson. But when his vow caused the death of his little brother, Hudson turned his grief on Calease and destroyed the dream world. The battle left him with new abilities and disturbing visions of a silent girl in grave danger—Mariella.

Now, Hudson is fighting to save Mariella's life while she fights to give it away. And he must find a way to show her Orane’s true intentions before she is lost to Paradise forever.

The Review: Sing Sweet Nightingale was a great read and I really enjoyed it!
The synopsis is very accurate as we meet Hudson Vincent at a time when his world is about to fall apart, forced to watch as his little brother is murdered because of him and his promise to an ‘Angel’ that he wouldn’t fight again. Upon confronting his ‘angel’ Calease, he soon realises that things aren’t right and turns on Calease only to come out the other side a changed man with powers, eyes of black and prophetic dreams. It’s with these prophetic dreams that he dreams of a young girl, wreathed in fire and gagged and he just knows that he must save her because surely she is in the clutches of the same kind of parasite as he was and so far the only clue he has is the name of a town – Swallows Grove – to which he heads along with his very trusting benefactor. There he eventually finds Mariella Teagan, an elective mute who hasn’t spoken to a soul for four years in her promise to the man she loves Orane. Orane transports her to Paradise every night where she has the time of her life and is patiently waiting for him to help her cross over forever, he says the time is close, hints at it being her 18th birthday, but she’s been waiting for a decade to stay. No one knows anything about Paradise or why Mari chooses not to speak until a mysterious black eyed boy turns up and rocks her nice safe world…. How can he know about Orane and where they go at night? It goes against all Orane has told her…. But what if what he’s saying is true?
So, I really liked this book and found it easy to be swept into the story. I thought the idea of dream demons was quite unique and interesting and I really liked what they did, how they went about doing it and how it transferred over into our world but I feel that we just scratched the surface of what is waiting on the other side and would love to see that explored more. They were quite sinister like sirens maybe where you are drawn to them, can feel an underlying agenda but don’t understand it until it’s upon you and you’re forced to fight. There was also a tangible sense of urgency& danger throughout the book and the main demon had a bit of a personality disorder going on as he swung from being so sweet to his potential victim and then turned on Hudson with vengeance & possessive rage showing a vastly different personality that all of the great bad guys should have. I loved Hudsons character, I liked how he didn’t let his brothers death break him, I like how he took his revenge and gained unexpected gifts from that but then decided to use that to stop the damage that had been done to him from being done to others, not wanting anyone to suffer the way he had. He became someone warrior like which shone through in his protectiveness and determination. I did like Mariella but felt she was a bit of a flake in the beginning, she was so enamoured with Orane that it totally blinded her, but that was the aim and she was true to her victim status, I was glad when the lights started to go on for her and some of the true Mari shone through but again I feel that we still have a lot left to learn about her. To be honest I liked all of the characters and it was a well-rounded set that really complimented each other. I’m really looking forward to see where Hudson and Mari’s relationship will go seeing as it was just starting to blossom towards the end giving them both a little happiness. I thought the dreamworld that was created was very imaginative and limitless, I’m curious about what happens when people like Hudson take back control and found I have a good few questions regarding it but that’s usual for a first book. I also really liked the use of the stones and the new age element and hopefully that will be delved into more too. For a first book though, it was great! And I will definitely be looking out for the sequel.
