The first in the new SAINTS OF DENVER series from NYT bestselling author of the MARKED MEN series, Jay Crownover

Sometimes you have to tear everything down to build something new…

Sayer Cole is frozen inside. At least, that’s what it’s felt like for as long as she can remember. She’s yet to let anyone past her icy exterior – and the one guy she thinks might melt her heart couldn’t possibly be interested in someone so uptight.

Rough, hard and hot-as-hell, Zeb Fuller has rebuilt his life and his construction business since protecting his family sent him to jail all those years ago. His elegant client, Sayer, makes him feel like a Neanderthal in denim, but despite the many hints that he’s been dropping to get to know her better, she seems oblivious to his charms.

Just as things finally start to heat up, Zeb’s past comes back to haunt him and he needs Sayer’s professional help to right a wrong and to save more than himself. As these opposites dig in for the fight of their lives, fire and ice collide in an unstoppable explosion of steam…

The Review: Being a huge fan of Jay Crownover's work it's safe to say I know I'll read anything by this author at this point. When I came to the end of the Marked Man series it was like an end of a era but knowing that a spin-off series titled Saints of Denver was coming, I was more than excited to see what Jay next had in store for us and as usual, this lady doesn't disappoint with Built.

I've always had a soft spot for Zeb from the moment he first appeared in the Marked Men series so I was definitely excited to see him have his own story. I wanted to get to know him more and of course I couldn't miss out on this opportunity. I loved his story! Zeb has definitely had a hard life when he made a mistake that put him in jail. Even though he was never really a bad guy, he's worked hard to prove to people that people make mistakes and given the chance they can turn their lives around. That's what Zeb did. He became a better person. Sought help for his issues. And I really admire that about him. He's life becomes even more crazier when his past catches up to him. But I loved how he was willing to step up to the plate and do something many people might not want to do.

I struggled a little bit with Sayer as a character. It wasn't because she was a new character but more that I wanted to get to know her more before her feelings for Zeb started to show. Yes, the characters have previously meet but it all felt a little too soon for her story. I wanted to know more about her before she started showing her feelings for Zeb but it was literally from page one. Felt a little insta-lovey on her part. But otherwise I felt her and Zeb were a good match. I wish there wasn't so much back and forth from Sayer though. She could see she had a good thing with Zeb but was too scared to try. But nonetheless when they were together it was fantastic to read.

I'm definitely excited to see what comes next from the series. Jay proves that she write smouldering love stories time and time again so I know for sure I'll definitely be reading the next.

Thank you to HarperCollins for giving me the opportunity to review this book in exchange for an honest review.

Jay Crownover’s New York Times and USA Today bestselling Marked Men series continues with the much anticipated story of southern charmer and certified criminal Asa Cross.

Starting over in Denver with a whole new circle of friends and family, Asa Cross struggles with being the man he knows everyone wants him to be and the man he knows he really is. A leopard doesn’t it change its spots and Asa has always been a predator. He doesn’t want to hurt those who love and rely on him, especially one luscious arresting cop who suddenly seems to be interested in him for far more than his penchant for breaking the law. But letting go of old habits is hard, and it’s easy to hit bottom when it’s the place you know best.

Royal Hastings is quickly learning what the bottom looks like after a tragic situation at work threatens not only her career but her partner’s life. As a woman who has only ever had a few real friends she’s trying to muddle through her confusion and devastation all alone. Except she can’t stop thinking about the sexy southern bartender she locked up. Crushing on Asa is the last thing she needs but his allure is too strong to resist. His long criminal record can only hurt her already shaky career and chasing after a guy who has no respect for the law or himself can only end in heartbreak.

A longtime criminal and a cop together just seems so wrong . . . but for Asa and Royal, being wrong together is the only right choice to make.

The Review: It's hard to believe this is the end of the lovable Marked Men series. For the past three years these guys have filled the book world and it's definitely a bittersweet moment for their stories to end!

Asa has always done the wrong thing. He'd do anything to get what he wanted, even if that meant he had to hurt, lie and steal from people. As long as Asa got what he wanted everything was okay. Until it wasn't when he messed with the wrong people and Asa's life was suddenly on the line. Now trying to be a better man as best he can, Asa doesn't have much hope that he deserves any future opportunities that come his way and that's including the red-headed cop Royal.

Royal knows she shouldn't be attracted to Asa because he's everything she shouldn't want in a guy being a cop and all. But once her job is put on the line after her partner is injured Royal starts looking for confront from Asa - even though he keeps turning her down.

Can these two make the most of what they've got and find happiness or will they forever be alone in misery?

This is another great read from Jay Crownover! Since I've read her Welcome to the Point series I  have to say I do prefer them over the Marked Men series but they're still awesome reads and I've become so attached to all the character, it's going to be hard to let them go. I am hoping we will see sneak peaks from them in the Saints of Denver series - which I know is just going to be awesome.

I love Asa and Royal. Asa has definitely been a character that you have to grow to love because when you first meet him he isn't very nice. But he changes - even if he doesn't see it - for the better and he becomes a guy worthy of the respect and love all the other guys have. As for Royal, she hasn't been in the series very long. Only like 2 books or so but she fast became a favourite. She's quirky and fun. I love how she's always locking herself our of her apartment or car because she feels so realistic. And the romance between Asa and Royal is simply hot. And I really enjoyed how Royal pushed Asa to go after what he wanted.

So yeah, I really enjoyed Asa. I would have loved some more time with the rest of the gang but they've all had their moments but I really liked seeing some of their stories end to.

In all the Marked Men series is a fantastic new adult series and one I highly recommend you read!

Some men are just better when they're bold.

Welcome to the Point...

In a dark and broken kingdom, a ruler has to be fearless to control the streets and the ruthless people who run them.

Race Hartman is just bold enough, just smart enough, and just lost enough to wear the crown. Places like the Point will always have bad things and bad people, but the man in control of all that badness can minimize the devastation. Race has a plan, but can he prevent total annihilation without destroying himself?

Brysen Carter has always seen her best friend's brother for what he is--too pretty, too smooth, and way too dangerous to touch. Basking in Race's golden glow is very tempting, but Brysen knows she'd eventually get burned.

When she starts receiving threatening texts and someone tries to take her out in parking lot, the only person interested in keeping her safe is the one man she can't allow herself to have.

Sometimes being bold is the only way to stay alive. But can she let Race save her life . . . if it means losing herself to him?

The Review: Better When He’s Bold is the sequel to Jay Crownover’s Better When He’s Bad and what an smouldering, sexy and BOLD read it is!

Race Hartman betrayed his best friend in order to save his sister Dovie and that’s something he has to live with for the rest of his life. Now he’s trying to create some order in The Point and has taken on a business partner to help him. Race knows he can’t change The Point but he will do his best to make the damage minimal, especially now he’s in charge.

Brysen Carter might appear to be the girl from the right tracks but pretending isn’t always what it seems and Brysen seems to do a lot of that lately. Especially when her home life keeps dragging her down and it’s only going to get worse.

When Brysen starts receiving threatening text messages and someone tries to run her over in the parking lot outside of her work, there’s only one person she can turn to and that’s her best friends brother – Race, whom she’s determined to not get attached to because she knows she’ll only get hurt, especially with his role within the Point. But soon, Brysen and Race start to depend on each other much than they’d both like but there is much more going on that they know about and soon both of them are in danger…….

Hello Race Hartman! I loved Better When He’s Bad and so I went into Better When He’s Bold with high expectations and Jay Crownover met them all. Seriously, this woman is a writing machine and definitely knows how to produce an awesome book that leaves you wanting more and more. Seriously, I want more. Better When He’s Bold is just as edgy, dangerous, exciting, riveting and addictive as Better When He’s Better Bad and I enjoyed this instalment just as much as the first. Race and Brysen has a completely different story than Bax and Dovie and it was really refreshing going into their story and not knowing what to expect. Race is one bold guy. Not only that, he’s super smart and I loved that he was different. He’s a good guy with just a touch of bad in him and everything he’s doing; he’s trying to make a better place out of The Point even though he won’t be able to make it a lovely place to live. He’s trying to make it bearable for people and not so dangerous.

Brysen brings her own set of problems to the story and once again, it was refreshing to read about her story and find out how it’s fits into Race’s world. Brysen’s father – grrrr! What a douche! And her Mother was no better either. But I enjoyed the plot of their story and the end results were nerve-racking but exciting to read about.

What else I loved about the story and the series so far is the secondary characters. Bax’s brother Titus is a great addition to the series but I’m starting to believe that maybe Nassir – Race’s new business partner may be one to watch out for too. And then we also have Brysen’s sister Karsen. A potential story may be brewing there too.

In all, Welcome to the Point has proved to be another addictive and smokin’ hot series by Jay Crownover and I’m seriously left wanting more, so thank god there’s more to come with Titus’s book - Better When He's Brave. Yay!

{Audio Review} Better When He's Bad (Welcome to the Point #1) by Jay Crownover

Finished Date: March 24th, 2015
Publishers: Harper Audio
Genre: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Format: Audiobook
Length: 10 hrs and 32 mins
Narrated by: Mia Barron, Leland King
Welcome to the Point . . .

There's a difference between a bad boy and a boy who's bad. . . . Meet Shane Baxter.

Sexy, dark, and dangerous, Bax isn't just from the wrong side of the tracks, he is the wrong side of the tracks. A criminal, a thug, and a brawler, he was the master of bad choices, until one such choice landed him in prison for five years. Now Bax is out and looking for answers, and he doesn't care what he has to do or who he has to hurt to get them. But there's a new player in the game, and she's much too innocent, much too soft . . . and standing directly in his way.

Dovie Pryce knows all about living a hard life and the tough choices that come with it. She's always tried to be good, tried to help others, and tried not to let the darkness pull her down. But the streets are fighting back, things have gone from bad to worse, and the only person who can help her is the scariest, sexiest, most complicated ex-con the Point has ever produced.

Bax terrifies her, awakening feelings she never thought she'd have for a guy like him. But it doesn't take Dovie long to realize . . . some boys are just better when they're bad.

The Review: I love Jay Crownover’s Marked Men series, so that immediately made me want to read her Welcome to the Point series. Like any other girl, I love a good bad boy but are the bad boys we read about ever truly bad? Well Jay Crownover has taken it upon herself to show what it truly means to read about a bad boy and Shane Baxter is as bad as they come.

I’ve got to say, this has definitely become my favourite audiobook that I’ve listened to so far. I know I haven’t listening to that many – maybe 15 or so, but still Better When He’s Bad is a firm favourite. From the moment I started listening to it, I was gripped and that has a lot do with the narrators narrating the story because Leland King and Mia Barron did a fantastic job. I’ve never listened to anything from them before but this won’t be my last because like I said, they were great. They did the narration of the story perfect and really managed to capture the emotions of the characters so well.

But it was the plot of the story that blew me away. I absolutely loved it. It was hot, sexy, dangerous, edgy, gripping, real and so exciting. You just never know what’s going to happen in the point. It’s in a world of its own, where rules don’t apply and it’s freaking scary what goes on there. The fact that Bax is from the point – has lived there all his life – it’s no wonder he turned out the way he did, but just because he’s bad, it doesn’t mean there isn’t some good left in him, because there is. ;)

I really loved Dovie as a character. Although she isn’t originally from the point, she’s still familiar with it and doesn’t shy away from what happens there. She’s smart about living where she does and with Bax coming into her life it really was a good thing. I loved that she doesn’t try to change Bax. She takes him as he is. It proves how much of a strong character she is.

And then we have Race – Bax’s best friend and Dovie’s older brother. It’s hard to work him out in the story because of the things he’s done, whether they were intentional or not. So I’m looking forward to reading more in Better When He’s Bold.

In all, Better When He’s Bad is a fantastic read and one I recommend you reading this year!

{Review} Rowdy (Marked Men #5) by Jay Crownover

After the only girl he ever loved told him he would never be enough, Rowdy St. James knocked the Texas dust off his boots and decided he was going to do everything in his power to live up to his nickname. Life was all about a good time, good friends and never taking much too seriously. Rowdy learned his lesson early on, when you care that much about anything it can destroy you, and he never wants to risk feeling like that again. Only now he has a new coworker, a ghost from the past who’s making him question every lesson he ever learned.

Salem Cruz grew up in a house with too many rules, too many regulations, and no fun allowed. That never worked for her so she left it all behind as soon as she could, but she never forgot the sweet, blue-eyed boy next door who’d been in love with her little sister. Fate and good intentions from an old friend have placed her right in Rowdy’s path and she’s determined to show him he picked the wrong sister all those years ago. A mission that is going along perfectly until the one person that ties them together shows up and could very well tear them back.

The Review: I’m always excited for another Marked Men story by author Jay Crownover and even more excited to finally get Rowdy’s story like I know many of you are. Well, look no further because the times finally here and what a great read it was.

Salem Cruz has always lived her life under strict rules handed out her Pastor father. She was never the daughter she was supposed to be and always a disappointment to her family. When she decided to leave town when she became of age, she didn’t look back but she always remembered the one person she could be herself around, Rowland. Now making a name for herself and doing well, Salem still doesn’t settle in one place, but when an opportunity comes knocking for her to reconnect herself with Rowland, now going by the name Rowdy, she decides it’s time to see if the connection they once has is still there.

Rowdy St James has had a life where everyone has left him. His mother, his ex-girlfriend and even the one girl he had a deep connection left their small hometown and didn’t look back. Refusing to get close to anyone else again, Rowdy has put up walls that no-one can break. That is until Salem Cruz storms back into his life openly admitting that he’s one of the reasons she’s now working at Marked. Can Salem and Rowdy overcome their issues before they destroy the own happiness?

What another great addition to the Marked Men series! Rowdy and Salem didn’t disappoint. I have to say, I was a little worried to start with because the first 20% of the story was very similar to Nash’s. I didn’t want to read the same story twice but with different characters, but thankfully the story changed in a good direction that wasn’t at all like Nash’s – panic over!

Anyway, Rowdy has always had a strong presence in the other guy’s stories but I’ve never felt as though I really got to know him. This is why I was so excited to read his story and I really liked what I saw. Deep down he’s a very loving and genuine person. He doesn’t do anything by halves and is really passionate about his work and the special people who are in his life – like the rest of the Marked Men gang. I was really compelled by his and Salem’s past because it was actually a pretty sad one, but it’s their connection to one another that keeps them going. It’s a beautiful relationship trying to overcome some hard times. And Salem was an awesome character to get to know.

What I enjoy about this series so much though is the friendships and how much the characters love on another. I love the progression with the other characters and the sneak peeks into their lives so we don’t forget about them. But most of all, I love the bond they have with each other. They’d do anything for each other and it’s really touching to read.

So in all Rowdy’s story was definitely a good one and I cannot wait for Asa’s and Royal’s story now – I have very high hope for them two! And I really enjoyed Buddy reading this with Emma from Never Judge a Book by it's Cover.

{Review} Nash (A Marked Men #4) by Jay Crownover

The fourth book in the scorching hot NEW YORK TIMES bestselling MARKED MEN New Adult series.

Nash Donovan, tattooist and good-time guy, never knew his father. Instead, he was brought up by his Uncle Phil, the best role model and mentor a guy could have. But when Phil is rushed to hospital and reveals he’s at the end stages of lung cancer, he wants Nash to know the truth. Reeling from the family secret Phil has let slip, Nash needs something to hold on to – and the nurse with the beautiful grey eyes taking care of Phil seems remarkably familiar…

Saint Ford doesn’t know what to think when Nash crashes back into her life. They went to school together what feels like a million years ago and although she feels – and looks – very different, she can’t tell if Nash is still the same guy: the guy who teased and bullied her way back when and who she vowed never to forgive.

But Nash is impossible to stay away from. From his flame-tattooed head to his multiple piercings, and his all-round good guy attitude, he’s unlike anyone Saint has ever known – does she still carry a flame for the first guy to steal her heart? And can she forgive him – and herself – for the mistakes of the past?

The Review: I love the Marked Men series! I’ve been dying for Nash’s story ever since I first started because I just couldn’t wait to unravel him as a character.  And his story wow, talk about an emotional tear jerker.

Nash Donavon has spent his whole life knowing he is unwanted by his mother. It’s only his Uncle Phil that Nash knows cares for him because he’s spent his whole life learning from Phil and being bought up in a loving home. It’s not until Phil become terminally ill that Nash’s whole world comes crashing down and secrets that were hidden from Nash become revealed. It’s only when he bumps into Saint Ford, a girl who he went to high school with does Nash find that person he believes he could be happy with.

Saint Ford remembers Nash Donavon from high school; it’s a little hard not too seems as he broke her heart. Now a nurse and looking after Nash’s Uncle, Saint still struggles with what Nash did to her and for that reason, she knows she cannot let him get close to her. But trying to ignore Nash is harder than it seems, especially when he’s determined to get to know Saint.

Through the heart ache, can Nash and Saint find the strength to deal with their lives and try to move on from the past?

Nash is a fantastic addition to this seriously hot and fantastic series! With each book I always wonder what Jay Crownover will do next and somehow she always manages to write a better story. I’m torn between who I love more now out of all the boys we’ve seen so far, they are all so different that it’s hard to pick a favourite. However, I do have a soft spot for Nash!

Nash's story is so much more emotional that the other stories we’ve previously read. At times it’s simply heart-breaking and all I wanted to do was swoop Nash up into a big hug. He’s dealing with a lot at a very difficult time and I couldn’t help feel sorry for him. His Uncle Phil was the best Uncle ever. He took Nash in when his mother wasn’t interested and of course, there is a under laying secret hidden their too. It was a great twist – one I really enjoyed – but I do wish they had more time together.

I found Saint a little harder to connect too but still I thought she was a great match for Nash. I liked her back story but I didn’t really feel like it warranted the emotion block that she does. I could understand that it was a sensitive subject for her – how Nash broke her heart – but the story really isn’t as it seems and once you find out the truth and I think Saint turned it into something it really wasn’t. Still though, I liked her, I liked her with Nash and I loved when they were together too.

There are some interesting new characters introduced into this story too, Nash’s hot neighbour who I can’t help might be set up for Asa. If so, that will be very interesting. And of course, we see Salem who is set up for Rowdy. Overall, I can’t wait for the next two books. I’ll be sad to see this series end though! Simply, I can’t wait for more.

Favourite Quote: “All I can see is you. Why can't you understand that? No one shines as bright as you in the sky I'm looking at. To me there is no sun, no moon, and no stars in the sky, just endless miles of storm clouds and pretty, pretty gray.”

Cora Lewis is a whole lot of fun, and she knows how to keep her tattooed bad boy friends in line. But all that flash and sass hide the fact that she’s never gotten over the way her first love broke her heart. Now she has a plan to make sure that never happens again: She’s only going to fall in love with someone perfect.
Rome Archer is as far from perfect as a man can be. He’s stubborn and rigid, he’s bossy and has come back from his final tour of duty fundamentally broken. Rome’s used to filling a role: big brother, doting son, super soldier; and now none of these fit anymore. Now he’s just a man trying to figure out what to do with the rest of his life while keeping the demons of war and loss at bay. He would have been glad to suffer it alone, until Cora comes sweeping into his life and becomes the only color on his bleak horizon.
Perfect isn’t in the cards for these two, but imperfect might just last forever . . .

The Review: Rome, you've stolen my heart! And there I was thinking no-one could beat Rule, but I was wrong! Eek! I loved Rome and Cora's story - so much more than the other characters. Mainly because this was so damn unpredictable and so very intense. I need more!

Cora Lewis has always been the mother of the group. She looks after her boys at the tattoo shop and she always keeps everyone together. However, no matter how together she tries to make everyone, it's Cora that needs the help. Since her ex-boyfriend cheated on her and is now marrying someone else, Cora's heart can't no more pain, so she's decided she's going to wait for Mr. Right - Mr. Perfect. But what Cora doesn't realise is that nobody is perfect and while waiting for Mr. Right, she could miss the one guy that's right in front of her - Rome.

Awww Rome and Cora are absolutely perfect together, even despite being completely opposite on the outside. Rome is a big guy, muscled and shaved head. Cora is a tiny small women, with blonde short hair and tattoos on her arms, but even though they may not be perfect on the outside, their personalities, their hearts and their feelings for one another are. With Rome arriving home from the war, he's different - changed - and everyone is trying to let him settle in. Not Cora though. She doesn't take any of his attitude and matches up to every thing he dishes out to her and I loved every minutes of these two interacting. It was so bloody entertaining - so many laugh out loud moments, and very intense. I completely fell for both of these characters....Rome especially. I just wanted to give him a big cuddle - he's suffered so much, but seeing him open up to Cora was fantastic.

I think I enjoyed this story so much more because Cora and Rome's relationship develops more in ways the other couples stories don't. I won't tell you how because it will spoilt it, but I loved the direction their story went - and I can't wait to see what becomes of their situation.

In all, Rome's story was another fantastic instalment from Jay Crownover and I think it's time we had Nash's story - like today! Eek, I can't wait.
Jay CrownoverAuthor Interview with Jay Crownover.

1)     What inspired you to write the Marked Men series?
Life; the way tattooed guys are always portrayed in books - I just wanted to see a little bit of my life, my subculture and things I like done in a book. Plus I wanted to write about a group of people who are really relatable due to the hardship they share in trying to figure out who they are instead of who they think, or who others think, they should be.

2)     How long did it take to write each book?
It takes me about 6 weeks but after a rough draft is done it takes about 6 months to get a final, polished product. I think I wrote Rome the fastest in about 20 days or so!
3)     Who is your favourite guy/couple from the series?
I like them all for different reasons. I don’t have a favourite! They all hold a special place in my heart and represent a different idea or ideal I hold dear.
4)     Since Rome’s story involves Cora, we are interested to know how you decided she would be his love interest?
From the first time she was introduced! Rome is big and bossy; I knew he needed someone small and feisty to go toe to toe with him. Plus I liked the David and Goliath feel to them. He’s all big and looming with all these issues and she’s just this tiny mouthy thing ready to go to battle for him and with him. Plus at the core they are the protectors and the caretakers of the group. They were the perfect match.
5)     What’s your favourite quote from Rome’s story?
Probably when Remy tells Rome, “Love isn’t perfect, but it’s those imperfections in it that make it worth the ride.”

6)     Could you tell us what you’re working on now?
I just finished copyedits on Nash’s story (it’s a heartbreaker!), and also the rough draft of the 2nd book in a new series I’m releasing this summer.

7)     We’ve noticed you’re a fan of tattoos – if you could have 1 tattoo that relates to the marked men, what would you choose and why?
I wouldn’t. My tattoos don’t really work like that. I recently got a stack of books and an old writing quill tattooed on my arm to represent reading and writing, just my general love of the literary world. I don’t get stuff to represent a specific thing like the Marked Men. I like big sweeping concepts instead.

AUTHOR BIO from Goodreads.
I'm supposed to share interesting details about myself so that my readers get to know me so here we go in no particular order: I'm an natural redhead even though I haven't seen my real hair color in years, I'm a big fan of tattoos and have a half sleeve on either arm and various other pieces all over the place, I've been in the bar industry since I was in college and it has always offered interesting insight into how men and women interact with each other, I have 3 dogs that are all crazy, I live in Colorado and love the snow, I love music and in all reality wish I could be a rock star not a writer or a bartender but I have zero talent so there is that.
I love to write, love to read and all I'm interested in is a good story with interesting characters that make the reader feel something.

With his tight leather pants and a sharp edge that makes him dangerous, Jet Keller is every girl’s rock and roll fantasy. But Ayden Cross is done walking on the wild side with bad boys. She doesn’t want to give in to the heat she sees in Jet’s dark, haunted eyes. She’s afraid of getting burned from the sparks of their spontaneous combustion, even as his touch sets her on fire.

Jet can’t resist the Southern Belle with mile-long legs in cowboy boots who defies his every expectation. Yet the closer he feels to Ayden, the less he seems to know her. While he’s tempted to get under her skin and undo her in every way, he knows firsthand what happens to two people with very different ideas about relationships.

Will the blaze burn into an enduring love. . . or will it consume their dreams and turn them to ashes?

The Review: “Love isn’t perfect. It’s hard work and sometimes it’s more effort to be in love than it is to just run away. If you keep looking for perfect, the real thing is going to pass right by you.”

I really enjoyed Jay Crownover's Rule last year, so I knew I wanted to read the next instalment, but this time it would be about Jet, the tattooed bad boy and the lead singer in a rock band.

Jet and Ayden have had this attraction to one another since they first met a year ago. A year later and they're still trying to fight it. Both come from backgrounds that mean they don't want anything to heavy, especially Ayden that has a brother that always drags her into his messes and then Jet, has a father that is just a waste of space and uses his Jet's mother to get what he wants. When Jet and Ayden decide they can no longer fight their feelings for one another, they're taken on a whirlwind ride where soon their feelings become more than just attraction. But with them both going in opposite directions, can things ever work out for them?

For any of you who haven't read started the Marked Man series, then I highly suggest you do it now. Jay Crownover's stories are fantastic, that honestly leaving you a hot mess after reading them, because of her ability to write awesome characters that continue to grow and grow through out the entire story. If you've already read Rule, then you and I both know that we first meet Jet and Ayden there, so we already know a little bit about their characters. I guess I had already thought I knew what both characters were like because of already meeting them, but boy was I wrong. I think the most surprising character was Jet. Although Jet's appearance makes him look like the typical bad boy, deep down, he's sweet, caring and alluring. He recognises his feelings for Ayden and knows she's this precious gem that he needs to take care of. However, because of his family problems, he determined to not drag Ayden down and become his father. I loved Jet for that. That he was willing to do anything for Ayden. I guess Jet surprised me because he was a very thoughtful guy, one that was completely not who you thought he was.

Now Ayden was the same with Jet as he was with her - protective. Ayden has to struggle with herself and often sees herself as two different people. She's had a tough past that she doesn't like to share with anyone and some times she just wants to let loose. Jet is her escape. Her one thing that can bring her back down to earth. Ayden sometimes said things to Jet that you would have expected Jet to say, she would tell him they couldn't have anything more when he wanted more from her. She's scared that her past will get him hurt and again, her protective side comes out. She was a great character, one that was lovable and easy to connect too and I could see why her and Jet made such a good team.

Another part I love about Jay's work is how close of a group all the guys are with the girls. They'd do anything to help each other out and are always on call for advice or just to be there. Rowdy is fast becoming a favourite. I loved how much he was there for Jet and Ayden and I can't wait for him to get his own story. The only character I'm not completely convinced of yet is Asa, Ayden's brother. In my eyes he hasn't redeemed himself yet but hopefully with the release of more books, we'll see more from him.

It's safe to say I can't wait to crack into Rome's story - which is the third instalment in the series. I have on good authority that his and Cora's story is even better than Jet's, so I can not wait.

Opposites in every way . . . except the one that matters

Shaw Landon loved Rule Archer from the moment she laid eyes on him. Rule is everything a straight--A pre-med student like Shaw shouldn't want--and the only person she's never tried to please. She isn't afraid of his scary piercings and tattoos or his wild attitude. Though she knows that Rule is wrong for her, her heart just won't listen.

To a rebel like Rule Archer, Shaw Landon is a stuck-up, perfect princess-and his dead twin brother's girl. She lives by other people's rules; he makes his own. He doesn't have time for a good girl like Shaw-even if she's the only one who can see the person he truly is.

But a short skirt, too many birthday cocktails, and spilled secrets lead to a night neither can forget. Now, Shaw and Rule have to figure out how a girl like her and a guy like him are supposed to be together without destroying their love . . . or each other.

The first Marked Men novel in Jay Crownover's combustible New Adult series.

The Review: “I don’t care what colour your hair is, if you’re pale or tan, if you have makeup on or just woke up all I care about is that when I look at you, you always look back and see me.  You’re beautiful inside and out and if you wanted to tattoo all that pretty white skin from head to toe I would be honoured to put it there for you but if not I’ll take you all smooth and milky white any chance I get.”

This is the first book I've read by author Jay Crownover and it definitely won't be my last! Rule is a great start to a series following some hot bad boys and it's one you won't want to put down once you start.

Immediately I was draw to Rule because of the hot guy on the cover - well who wouldn't be? Secondly, once I started reading this book had my complete attention. It was easy to read, it was well written and it was honestly a good read. It had some exciting and emotional twists and some a little predictable, but nonetheless, it was still a good read.

Rule and Shaw have known each other most of their lives, however Shaw was always closers to Rule's brother. Shaw's always had feelings for Rule but she's never told him because of his ways. Rule is a ladies man, a rebel, a tattooed hottie but Rule has some emotional baggage. Luckily enough Shaw has her fair share of baggage, so she can relate to Rule....but will Rule let her in?

I really enjoyed Rule and Shaw's story. Even though I read a few book similar, what made this stand out the most was the way the author wrote the characters. I connected to them and really felt their emotions. They were both very likeable and honest. Their story is a slow one to start with but once Shaw opens up to Rule, it's literally spine-tingly! It gets so good. It's intense and completely crazy sometimes but it's such a good thing. The story was very emotional, and that's not just the relationship between the two main characters but with Rule and his parents and Shaw and  her parents. It was sad to see such great characters going through so much angst because of their parents.

Overall, Rule is a book that ruled! It's a great addition to the NA world and I for one, can't wait to read more from Jay in Jet and Rome.

Soon he becomes the center of her daring new life, pulling love and lust and emotion out of her in ways she never imagined possible. But there is more to Andrew than Camryn realizes.

Will his secret push them inseparably together-or destroy them forever?

Q&A with J.A Redmerski

J.A. RedmerskiCould you tell us about writing experience for The Edge of Never?
The writing experience was like a roller coaster ride for me. I neglected just about everything else in my life, I'm embarrassed to say! I had a lot of anxiety because Camryn and Andrew were all that I thought about!

How long did it take to write?
Six weeks! This is a record for me.

What was the most challenging thing about writing this book?
Hmmm, probably the ending. It was already over the typical word-count for a contemporary romance so I knew I couldn't add much more or it would have been way too long of a book. And later, the short epilogue did disappoint some readers because they wanted so much more. They wanted to know everything that happened in Camryn and Andrew's life. However, I made up for that in the sequel, THE EDGE OF ALWAYS. ;-)

Who was your favourite character?
I love both Andrew and Camryn equally I think. They are both a part of me, their personalities, their outlook on life. They each say and do things that I have always wanted to say and do myself.

What message would you like readers to get from this book?
My message to readers would be never to let the monotony of everyday life let what kind of life you could really have, pass you by. Go out into the world, take some risks, step out of your comfort zone and breathe the fresh air. Don't say stagnant in the same place all your life because that's what society expects of you.

Any teasers for book 2?
No, my lips are zipped! But if you google "THE EDGE OF ALWAYS sneak peek" you'll find a few scenes that have already been released here and there!

What’s next for you?
I'm working on two books at the moment, the second book to mt series In the Company of Killers titled REVIVING IZABEL and a brand new New adult/Contemporary Romance standalone novel titled SONG OF THE FIREFLIES. That one is a spinoff of characters introduced in THE EDGE OF ALWAYS and yes, Camryn and Andrew make an appearance. :-)

Rule (Marked Men, #1)
Rule
by Jay Crownover

I was never supposed to be a rock star. I had my life all planned out for me. Play football in college. Go to the NFL. Marry my high school sweetheart and live happily ever after.

I broke both our hearts that day when I told her I was leaving. I was young. I made the right decision for me, but the wrong decision for us. I've poured my soul into my music, but I've never forgotten her. Her smell, her smile.

And now I'm going back.

After ten years.

I hope I can explain that after all this time.

I still want her to be my forever girl.

Excerpt
We ran back to the house to get dolled up for dinner. I put on one of my new outfits, a super tight pencil skirt and a sheer blue top with a black cami underneath. I curled my new hair, put on more makeup than I normally wore, and decided, just for the hell of it, to wear my awesome black boots that looked like something a Harley-Davidson model would wear. They gave my look a certain edge that I was feeling after a day of letting the real Shaw off her perpetual leash.
At the restaurant, Ayden’s slinky red dress, which made her long legs look endless, had our waiter practically drooling into our water every time he stopped by to refill our glasses. She made me try out my new ID by ordering a drink, and it worked like a charm. Before I knew it we were both feeling no pain and having a great time bouncing from club to club in LoDo and hitting the hip dive bars in Capitol Hill. I was surprised that I didn’t even need to show the fake ID at most places—turns out a tight skirt and exposed cleavage work just as well.
I was laughing hysterically at Ayden doing an impression of some guy flailing around on the dance floor. We had drawn a fair amount of attention everywhere we’d gone and had had to pay for very few drinks. At the moment a guy from CU–Boulder was telling me all about his illustrious football career, or rather he was telling my boobs about it since I don’t think he had looked up from the girls once. Ayden was rolling her eyes and trying
 to avoid some guy in
a banker suit who was offering to do her taxes for free if she gave him her number. It was silly and fun and I didn’t have to work hard at the flirting or being charming. I was well on my way to being wasted, so conversation was out. All I had to do was smile and sit prettily on the bar stool, two things I was apparently getting really good at. Another cosmo, which I definitely didn’t need, had just appeared before me and Mr. Football was leaning even closer to me when some sixth sense, or maybe it was my fight-or-flight response, suddenly kicked into overdrive.
I lifted my head and swivelled around on the stool, practically kneeing the leering football player. I looked around, craning my neck to see what had my skin suddenly feeling too tight, but all I saw was the regular bar crowd mixing and mingling. The football player was trying to get my attention back by running a finger up and down my bare arm; I guess it was supposed to be sexy, but now I was drunk and unnerved and I wanted him to get lost. I was suddenly ready to go, and looked around for Ayden so we could get a cab and get out of there. Before I could find her a warm hand slid under the heavy fall of my hair and settled on the back of my neck. A deep voice growled in my ear, “How in the fuck did you get in here, Casper? And what did you do to your hair?”
The football player’s eyes went huge because, well, Rule was Rule. Gone was the purple hair spiked up in a crazy mess. Now he had it all shaved on the sides and bleached out into a startling white Mohawk that was several inches tall. He had on a tight black shirt with a flaming skull in a Viking helmet on it, showing off both sleeves of tattoos, a pair of black jeans with a hole in the knee, and his heavy black motorcycle boots. He should have looked sloppy and unkempt next to the V-neck-sweater-wearing footballer, but he didn’t. He looked hot and rumpled and clearly not someone to be messed with. The footballer pushed away from the bar in a hurry and vanished into the crowd.
I was drunk, admittedly probably not the best state to try to go toe-to-toe with Rule, but I liked my hair and he wasn’t going to rain on all my birthday vibes, especially since he clearly didn’t even remember what day it was. I shook his grip loose and sucked back the tart drink in one swallow.
“What are you doing here?”
He lifted an eyebrow at me and took up the same spot the football player had vacated, looking down my low-cut top.
“This bar is right around the corner from the shop—Nash and I stop by all the time after work. I just finished with a client. I know they ID at the door, how did you get in?”
I flipped my hair over my shoulder like I had seen endless annoying girls do, only I practically fell off my stool because that last drink was letting me know just how bad an idea it had been to chug it. I grabbed the edge of the bar and Rule reached out a hand to steady me. I felt like it burned where he gripped my upper arm. Definitely should have listened to my flight response a minute ago. I put a hand on my forehead because it was warm and I suddenly felt clammy. “I need to go.” It was too hot, too loud, and if I didn’t get out into some fresh air, like now, I was pretty sure I was going to puke everywhere.
I tried to climb to my feet but the room started to spin around like crazy and I had to grab on to Rule’s biceps just to stay upright. I was so glad I opted for my boots instead of heels—I would have ended up on my face otherwise.
“Who drove?” Rule’s voice was coming from far away and he smelled really good. With a sigh I leaned into him and buried my nose in his throat. He was so tall I had to use my leverage on his arms to reach. “Seriously, Shaw, how did you get here?”
“Ayden and I, we took a cab.”
“Where is she?”
“With a banker. I need to go home.” I felt my boozy legs start to wobble and he locked a heavy arm around my waist to keep me anchored to his chest. It was nice. Not bothering to think about it, I wrapped both my arms up around his neck. He felt as good as I always knew he would.
“Her roommate is running around somewhere; wanna see if you can grab her? I’m gonna walk her to our place.” I wasn’t sure who he was talking to but a familiar voice rumbled an affirmative. The next thing I knew I was being half marched, half carried out the front door of the bar. The cold January air made me snap my head back and Rule moved me from the front of his body to his side, securing me with an arm around my shoulders. I hooked an arm around his lean waist and cuddled into him. I knew logically it was the vodka making me act crazy, but I couldn’t stop it.
“We’re only three blocks from my place. I’ll pour a gallon of coffee down your throat and shove some chips or a frozen burrito in your face and get you a cab. You’re even paler than normal and if you try to get in a car right now you’re gonna puke everywhere. Why are you drunk and dressed all sexified tonight anyway?”
I shivered a little as the wind breezed across my bare legs. I turned my cold nose into his ribs and inhaled. He smelled like the antiseptic from the shop, like cigarettes from Nash, like the hair product in his Mohawk, and underneath it all the warm, earthy smell that was just Rule. In the six years I had known him, I’d never been this close to him for this long. It was enough to send my sex-deprived and alcohol-soaked system into overdrive.
“You think I look sexy?” That seemed like the important part of the conversation. We stopped at a stop sign and he looked down at me with exasperation clear in those pale eyes.
“Shaw, every guy in the bar was circling you like you were bait in the water during shark week. You know you look good, what I think shouldn’t matter. What should matter is why you’re suddenly dressing, looking, and acting like a different person. What’s going on with you?”
I wanted to scowl up at him but that seemed too hard, especially when his T-shirt rode up in the back and my arm was brushing against nice, warm skin. I stumbled off the curb as we made our way down another block and his familiar Victorian apartment building came into sight. He pulled me in tighter to his side and I didn’t even try to hide the soft sigh that fell out of me.
“Everyone thinks I need to act a certain way—you, my parents, your parents, the girls from work, Gabe. Everybody always wants me to be this, do that, walk this line, toe that line and I’m sick of it. Maybe for just once I just want to act how I want and feel how I want to feel without someone judging me and expecting something from me in return.”
He was quiet as we walked up the front steps to the apartment. Maybe he was trying to translate my drunken speech because even I could hear that I was slurring between my chattering teeth. He pushed the door open and twisted the lock. It was warm inside so I shook off my jacket and pushed my shaking hands through my hair. I turned my blurry eyes on him and almost swallowed my tongue. He was leaning back against the door watching me with hooded eyes. He wasn’t throwing sarcastic barbs at me or ignoring me, he was just watching me. I blew out a breath and tasted the tartness of the cranberry juice across my tongue.
I took a few unsteady steps toward him. He was so tall that I had to stand on the very tips of my toes to reach his ear. I put a hand on his shoulder and one on the door beside his head and whispered, “It’s my birthday, Rule.”
I expected him to move away, to gently shove me to the side, but he uncrossed his arms and placed his hands on either side of my waist. Those pale eyes flared for a second and his mouth twisted down, making the hoop on the side of his mouth glint at me. “I’m sorry, Shaw. I had no idea.”
I shrugged it off and moved a step closer to him. “It’s okay—my own family didn’t even remember it.” I pressed so close to him that my chest was flat against his. I could feel that the close proximity was having an effect on him. If I hadn’t had to concentrate on my balance since I was on my toes I might have grinned at that. All I had ever wanted in life was to affect him, to get him to feel something, anything, other than simple tolerance for me.
“I know what you can do for me to make this officially the best birthday ever.” I wanted to sound sure, to sound sexy and sultry, but I’m pretty sure I just sounded horny and drunk. I didn’t care. I was here—the real me—the one who wanted him so desperately and always had. There was no chance at putting her back in her cage now.
I didn’t think—didn’t reason—just used the grip I had on him to pull myself up even taller and plant my mouth solidly over his. The ring in his lip was shockingly cold against my own; the rest of him was undeniably hot and hard. It was everything I had ever wanted, and even though he didn’t kiss me back, I still ranked it up there as the best birthday gift ever. I went to settle back down on my booted feet when something shifted, something changed, and Rule went from a passive recipient to something else entirely.
