A Review for Leaving Paradise by Simone Elkeles

Published Date: April 1st, 2007

Format: Paperback
Pages: 303

The blurb from Goodreads: Nothing has been the same since Caleb Becker left a party drunk, got behind the wheel, and hit Maggie Armstrong. Even after months of painful physical therapy, Maggie walks with a limp. Her social life is nil and a scholarship to study abroad—her chance to escape everyone and their pitying stares—has been canceled.
After a year in juvenile jail, Caleb’s free . . . if freedom means endless nagging from a transition coach and the prying eyes of the entire town. Coming home should feel good, but his family and ex-girlfriend seem like strangers.
Caleb and Maggie are outsiders, pigeon-holed as "criminal" and "freak." Then the truth emerges about what really happened the night of the accident and, once again, everything changes. It’s a bleak and tortuous journey for Caleb and Maggie, yet they end up finding comfort and strength from a surprising source: each other.
The Review: "Are you following me?" She asks, but doesn't meet my gaze. "Yeah" I say. "Why?" "Honestly?" She looks at me, her eyebrows raised. I give her the only honest and true answer I have. "You're where I want to be."
I'm gradually beginning to love Simone Elkeles more and more. Why? Because her writing style is fantastic. She has this way to capture the more real things that happen in live and put them onto the page. Leaving Paradise is the second book I've read of hers, and she didn't disappoint.

Leaving Paradise has two alternate POV's one from Caleb the other from Maggie. I've said this before I don't always love multiple POV's but I like it when its 2 characters only. This totally worked, I loved seeing how both Maggie and Caleb feel after the accident that left Maggie with a limp and Caleb in juvenile prison. This book had me from page one, it just completely draws you in and the characters are written so well that they feel super real and you connect with them on some level. Both Maggie and Caleb are likeable characters, and this is a story about forgiveness, being strong and finding what you need most in the other person even if you are the victim or the criminal.

I've read Simone Elkeles's Perfect Chemistry (First book only), and I think Leaving Paradise was better. Everything just feels more real, more plausible. Real people, real feelings, real actions. The love between Maggie and Caleb is naturally a slow to start because of the hate that Maggie feels towards Caleb for what he did. But as soon as they start to work for the same old Mrs. Reynolds, they begin to form a bond that's centered around them both being outcasts. I didn't feel it happend too quickly (Their love I mean). I personally think it was just the right amount of pacing, the right amount of tension. Everything was beautifully written, and thought out.

I'm not sure if I can say much more without going off on a tangent; so I'll stop there, and just mention that I urge everyone to pick up Leaving Paradise, if you haven't already done so. You won't be disappointed. And if you liked her Perfect Chemistry trilogy, then you'll love this.

The Blurb from Goodreads: For months part-angel Clara Gardner trained to face the raging forest fire from her visions and rescue the alluring and mysterious Christian Prescott from the blaze. But nothing could prepare her for the fateful decisions she would be forced to make that day, or the startling revelation that her purpose—the task she was put on earth to accomplish—is not as straightforward as she thought. Now, torn between her increasingly complicated feelings for Christian and her love for her boyfriend, Tucker, Clara struggles to make sense of what she was supposed to do the day of the fire. And, as she is drawn further into the world of part angels and the growing conflict between White Wings and Black Wings, Clara learns of the terrifying new reality that she must face: Someone close to her will die in a matter of months. With her future uncertain, the only thing Clara knows for sure is that the fire was just the beginning.
<
The Review: 3.5 out of 5: When I found out Hallowed was available on NetGalley, I immediately went and snatched it up because I’ve been dying to find out what happens. After reading it, I’ll admit I’m not as excited to read the third book as I would have hoped and here’s why.

After failing at her purpose, Clara doesn’t know what’s next. All she knows is that it isn’t over especially with the recurring dreams she’s getting. She knows someone is going to die, someone close to her and she knows the Black Wing will be back for her. So she has to prepare herself. Now torn between her feelings for Christian and for Tucker, Clara struggles to come to terms with who she should be with along with what she really is and isn’t prepared for the secrets to infold.

Like I said I was really excited to start Hallowed but it just felt like a second book to me. When I say second book, I mean the one that kind of just plod along and not much happen book. I kept reading  hoping something was going to happen and all though Clara does lose someone close to her that’s pretty much about it. I was left with more answers than I would have liked and I guess the author has set it up that way for book three in the series but I just can’t honestly see how everything will be tied together in just one more book and I’m left wondering if I can be pulled off. I guess we will see.

Even though I had a few problems with the book I still enjoyed parts. Mostly I enjoyed the relationship between Christian and Clara develop. Even though I’m totally Team Tucker, it is easy to fall in love with Christian during this story. In Unearthly we never really got to find out who he was so I’m glad we seen more of him in Hallowed. I also felt the love triangle was done very well even though I’m not happy with how it effected Clara and Tucker’s relationship, I can’t wait to find out more and in the end I do believe it will all work out how I’d like, because I think it will come down to Clara’s choice and her free will. I believe she will choose the right person.

We also got to see a whole new set of emotions during this book too and there were some pretty emotional scenes. What I didn’t expect was for the story with Clara’s brother, it was a huge twist but I honestly can’t see why it was put there. I’m hoping that will get explained a little better soon.

Overall Hallowed wasn’t as good as I was hoping but it was still good and I’ll still read book three and hopefully everything will tie together nicely.

Thank you HarperCollins for giving me the opportunity to review this book.

Jessica's Teaser Tuesday: Leaving Paradise by Simone Elkeles

Mine today comes from the swoon worthy Caleb Becker, and I've literally just read the line and have fallen in love...

"Maggie-" He takes my hand in his and places my palm against his cheek roughened with a day's worth of stubble. He turns his head and kisses the inner, sensitive part of my palm, his eyes holding my gaze. "I should have done this a year ago." My heart flips over as he leans in and touches his lips to mine.

Well there you go. I friggin' swooned right there. And I love you Caleb Becker...I feel a book boyfriend coming on very soon. *Le sigh*

That's it for today!

A Review for Hushed by Kelley York

The Blurb: He’s saved her. He’s loved her. He’s killed for her.

Eighteen-year-old Archer couldn’t protect his best friend, Vivian, from what happened when they were kids, so he’s never stopped trying to protect her from everything else. It doesn’t matter that Vivian only uses him when hopping from one toxic relationship to another—Archer is always there, waiting to be noticed.

Then along comes Evan, the only person who’s ever cared about Archer without a single string attached. The harder he falls for Evan, the more
Archer sees Vivian for the manipulative hot-mess she really is.

But Viv has her hooks in deep, and when she finds out about the murders
Archer’s committed and his relationship with Evan, she threatens to turn him in if she doesn’t get what she wants… And what she wants is Evan’s death, and for Archer to forfeit his last chance at redemption.

The Review: “He squeezed his eyes shut. A hand brushed his shoulder. Why did he always do that? Touch and go. It drove him crazy. Then Evan’s arms were sliding around him and all complaints vanished.”

I don’t even know what to say. If I could rate this book a 10, I so would. But it’s not even that, it’s just how incredible this book was. It’s something completely out of what I would normally read and I didn’t think I would love it. But God, I loved it. So much.  I loved it so much that I read it in one sitting, and now I only wish I had stalled and not read so fast. This is truly a wonderful read and had become on my favourite reads of 2011 so far.

Everything about Hushed is intense. The book starts of pretty grim with Archer persuading someone (I won’t mention who for fear of spoiling) to kill themselves on pain killers and vodka. Yeah, pretty gritty. And it doesn’t really ease up after that. Archer has tried to protect his best friend Vivian since they were kids, and after a horrible event that took place when they were kids, Archer swore to himself that he’d do anything to protect Vivian. And he does.

This book touches on some issues, unhealthy obsession, betrayal, homosexuality, murder, and even mental issues. It’s pretty intense throughout the book and even though Archer is supposed to be the ‘bad guy’ you can’t help but feel bad for him. His friendship (if you can call it that) with Vivian is not a healthy one. He’s always there, he’s sort of attracted to her but she won’t have him. She looks him over for the jerks that beat her up. Archer at first doesn’t really question his friendship with Vivian he just does what she wants, he goes where she wants him to. Beck. And. Call! It isn’t until Evan enters Archer’s life that Archer starts to feel that there are others out there that might care about him like he cares about Vivian. And it’s Evan that brings Archer back to life so to speak, he grounds him, he anchors him, he loves him. I loved Evan and Archer’s relationship, this is another love that was slow to build, Archer being very unsure of himself and others, thinking he couldn’t trust anyone but Vivian. But as he gets to know Evan more and more, he starts to fall for him. Now this is the first time I’ve read a book on Homosexuality, and I’m not against it AT ALL. In fact I find gay story lines some of the more romantic than the straight ones. It’s a wonderful moment when Archer frees himself and allows to be loved by Evan and it’s at that moment that you want nothing more than for the supposed bad guy, to get his happy ending. Kelly wrote their love wonderfully and I loved every moment shared between them, and I sighed and swooned anytime they were together and thought that there has never been a love more perfect than theirs. Watch out for that shower scene, it’s a beautiful moment because its unexpected and something that comes easily after so much tension. And it was this particular relationship between two people that surpasses all other relationships that I’ve read about in other YA novels.

Vivian at first I liked her...and it wasn’t until she became obsessed and jealous of Archer and Evan’s relationship that you finally see that she’s in fact the demon that has poisoned Archer all his life. She ultimately isn’t a very nice person at all, and I didn’t like her one bit. I found myself rooting for Archer all the way through and I’m glad he got his happy ending...sort of.

I commend Kelley for writing a book that not only touches on some serious issues but somehow manages to create characters that feel so real that you simply connect with them on some level (murder aside obviously).  She’s created a bad guy or a supposed bad guy and made you love him.

Hushed is a fast paced read that leaves you on the edge of your seat all the way through. It’s a pretty suspenseful thriller questioning and wishing for things that may or may not happen. Anyway I urge anyone to read Hushed and I hope you enjoy it. I most definitely did. I do urge that the mature YA community read this, just for some scenes of murder, blood, and a steamy scene in the shower...I'd say around 16+ would be best with regards to age.

Thank you to Entangled Publishing for allowing me to review this.

US vs UK (#32)

Welcome to Book Passion for Life's 32nd US vs UK book cover battle. We've seen this posted on a few other blogs, and thought we'd jump on the band wagon!

The idea of this battle is once a week we'll post 2 sets of books of our choice, one US cover and one UK cover, and we'll just give our opinion on which one we love the most. Which cover captures the story, which one would catch our eye if we saw it on the shelf in a shop. The US cover will be on the left, and the UK cover will be on the right.

The Scores so far are:
US: 9  UK: 13  Draw: 8

US vs UK Round 32

Delirium by Lauren Oliver

vs

Jess says: Ewwww! This is no contest for me! THE U.S GETS IT! Why? Because quite frankly that UK cover gives me the creeps, and that isn't how I picture Lena at all...UK, you got it TOTALLY and COMPLETELY WRONG! YAY to the U.S Special Edition...it's absolutely beautiful...I love it!

Donna says: Hahahaha! Jess hates the UK cover! So I thought this would be a good one to start with. But yeah, I totally have to agree. What the hell is up with the UK cover? Creepy....yes! It's horrible. Honestly, I don't even understand it. The US special edition is gorgeous!

The Other Life by Susanne Winnacker

 vs

Jess says: Hmm I've heard about this. And I'm going with the U.K, it's simple but still screams READ ME! I'm not sure what to make of the US cover...its ok, but the girl seems a little doped up? Anyway, the U.K take it with this one for me.

Donna says:  UK! UK! UK! Lol. I love the UK cover, although the US really fits the book. I just love the white background and the red butterfly that looks likes its bleeding. Love it!

Which do you prefer?

Okay guys, this weeks US vs UK goes to....It's a draw with 2 to both U.S and U.K.

A Review for Blood Bound by Rachel Vincent (Unbound #1)

The Blurb from Goodreads: By blood, by word, by magic...
Most can't touch the power. But Liv Warren is special— a paranormal tracker who follows the scent of blood. Liv makes her own rules, and the most important one is trust no one.
But when her friend's daughter goes missing, Liv has no choice but to find the girl. Thanks to a childhood oath, Liv can't rest until the child is home safe. But that means trusting Cam Caballero, the former lover forbidden to her.
Bound by oath and lost in desire for a man she cannot have, Liv is racing to save the child from a dark criminal underworld where secrets, lies, trauma and danger lurk around every corner…every touch…every kiss.
And more blood will be spilled before it's over…
<
The Review: "I have choices," I insisted, refusing to break eye contact. "We both do. I may have to make mine carefully, and make a few compromises along the way, but I have a choice. I choose you."

Well what can I say? Blood Bound was completely compelling and it had be from page 1. Blood Bound is something complete new and interesting to the world of books. This is the first book I've read by Rachel Vincent (I know I'm totally behind and doing it in the wrong order), and I'm completely in love with her style of writing. The gritty world that she created in Blood Bound was pretty intense. Liv is a 'Skilled' person with the ability to track anyone as long as she has a sample of their blood. So when a childhood friends daughter goes missing she's asked by her to help track the little girl. Now Liv is 'Bound' to help her friend thanks to a childhood oath that they all made, so Lic in unable to say no to the request without her brains blowing up. Unfortunately that means she has to work with her ex-boyfriend Cam Caballero. Ahhhhhhh CAM!! He's completely soon worthy in this book he'll have you falling at his gorgeous feet from page one when he first appears leaning on Liv's car looking gorgeous. With the help of Cam (who can track a person with just a full name) Liv, Cam and their friend Anne go on a roundabout adventure that uncovers many hidden truths and so many twists that it will leave your head spinning.

Blood Bound is split between Liv POV and Cam's; which was good. I don't always like multiple narratives but when it's just two of them its fine and it was good to get Cam's side on all the situations and it was amazing to read about how he still loves Liv even after she just took off and left without and explanation. It took me a while to warm to Liv, I actually preferred her friend Anne to begin with, but as I read on I began to love Liv, and she became easily likeable. She's extremely strong and completely kick-ass!  Her relationship with Cam sizzled on the page. Both of them have such chemistry that you root for them all the way through and that first (rekindle) kiss will melt you inside because the way Cam kisses her its enough to make you forget about all the other kisses in the books. Their love isn't the centre of the story, but it does add a nice pace to it and gives you some laughs when it's needed through some of the bad times.

I loved everything about this book. It's completely breath taking and it will have you on the edge of your seat with all the twists that are thrown at us as readers and Liv and Cam as characters. The one gripe I have with this book is that everything that happened happened in the space of 48 hours. And I mean A LOT happened that it just felt like it should have been a week instead of 2 days? But either way it all happened and the constant action in the book kept the book at a good pace that you forget that this is all happening within 2 days of Liv and Cam reuniting after 6 years.

The ending is needless to say a bloody cliffhanger...and it's one of those that makes you scream in side because you have to wait an entire year for book two! I won't spoil it but it's a "Will she? Or Won't she?" question that will be hanging there until Shadow Bound releases next year.

Anyway, for those of you that have already read other books by Rachel Vincent (I swear I will...I promise), I would definitely recommend this to you all. This should be for the older YA 17+ should do it as there is some sexual content half way through the book plus some innuendos. So 17+ should just about do it for age rage.

The Blurb from Goodreads: Life for Hayden Carlson had never been overly exciting and that was the way she liked it, so when she meets Jasper on a trail in the woods, it never occurs to her that life as she knows it is about to change.Suddenly, Hayden crosses over to a world she never would have dreamed existed and a future she never would have believed possible. Along the way, she discovers an affinity for magic; her ability to dream of the future and the craft of healing. She meets many beings that become her friends and family, as well as others who will try to capture her for her powers.Hayden must find a way to escape being captured, save the man she loves, and decide where she stands in the balance of good and evil.
<
The Review: Hayden lives a normal everyday life, she’s studying to become a vet and the rest of her time is devoted to her other passion. .  . . horses. She has owned her own horse for over 10 years and spends a lot of her time with him and training other horses in. One day whilst she is out on her horse ‘Dodge’ she comes across a new trail in the forest and sees a man at the opposite end who she is strangely drawn to. She doesn’t pursue at that time and when she returns later with a friend the trail is gone but once she goes back alone it appears again so she decides to take it and see where it leads. Not only does it lead her to the mysterious man but it leads her to a whole other world, a simpler, more beautiful place filled with wonder and magic . . . little does she know that this is just the beginning of a huge adventure for Hayden in which there is a prophecy that has marked her as ‘the chosen one’ and brings enemies from far and wide in an attempt to capture and use Hayden in any way possible but what they didn’t bank on is Hayden’s blossoming powers, her being fated to Jasper ‘the Queen’s Captain’ and the friends she makes along the way.
<
I didn’t know what to expect really when I said I would review this book (trilogy, actually) but I was really surprised because it was nothing like what I assumed it was going to be. I really enjoyed it actually, for some reason I thought it was YA but it isn’t. What it is, is a nice, easy to read fantasy with all sorts of creatures and magic users set in a not so far away place. We get really likable characters that you want to route for and want to know more about, lots of species, secrets, a prophecy which will interest most readers (who doesn’t love a good old prophecy), enemies galore coming from all over, loyalties are tested and new alliances are formed . . . everything a good fantasy should have and I really enjoyed it ! I LOVE the whole ‘fated’ thing, I’m a sucker for soul mates and these are proper soul mates, not the kind that would go off with someone else at the drop of a hat. NO, these are the ones who are in pain at being separated, only have eyes for each other, can’t keep their hands off each other, dream about their other halves for years before meeting them and lose all interest in the opposite sex once they start dreaming. They would do anything, live their lives and would die for their soul mates . . . . awww who doesn’t want that and it’s all sealed with their first kiss . . .perfect ! A really good start to the series and  I’m really curious to see where this all goes now because this is really just introducing the players and putting the plot into play, I want more on the prophecy, more on the enemies, more on who Hayden is meant to be, even more on all her friends . . .  I just want more!

PS. It really needs a new cover as the one it has doesn’t really do the book justice, this is definitely a ‘don’t judge a book by it’s cover’ instance.

The Blurb from Goodreads: Hayden has made up her mind. If she doesn't choose between the Namaels and the Majs then innocent beings won't die because of her. Of course, things can never be that simple and when she is taken prisoner by the humans a whole new problem arises. It doesn't take long before everything she thought she knew no longer makes sense. Could it be possible that the prophecy was wrong?
<
The Review: 4.5 out of 5We start up right where we left the first book,  Hayden, Jasper and Dodge are on a quest to the northern territories so that Dodge can find his stone and become a ‘winged one’ and to keep Hayden from the clutches of the Namael’s Queen Melana and the Maj’s vengeful second in command, Rainen. Their journey however is filled with danger and betrayal but they find help from an unexpected source only to have Hayden fall into the hands of a new enemy, another that would use her as a weapon but in the most despicable way. Bonds are broken and re-forged as Hayden makes a discovery about who and what is really the threat to Quelondain and vows to unite the shifters against their true enemy. But her enemies won’t be easily swayed and for all there is loss, there is also gain as alliances are formed and people continue to flock to Hayden, willing to believe in ‘the chosen one.  Hayden & Jasper are put in some very life threatening dangerous positions and have no choice but to take themselves out of the constant danger and return to Hayden’s world to ready themselves for what is coming  . . . . . . but will they want to return ? and will they truly be safe anywhere ?
<
Another really good book, full of adventure and love, hope, joy, sorrow . . . .  I don’t think there is an emotion I didn’t go through during this book. I love how the characters are growing and feel for them quite a bit. Hayden has blossomed from a person happy in her solitude to a determined woman who puts everyone else before herself, even enemies, even though her status puts her in constant danger, She rises to every challenge even if her path isn’t clear. As always Jasper is by her side, supporting her through everything no matter what, always believing in her. He has changed from a solitary person also, one used to taking or giving orders unconditionally until he became fated to Hayden and she became his world. Still loving the fated thing and love the way its brought to the reader, not just with the two main characters but with them all, you can really get a sense for the depth of emotions they are going through and it’s the type of love any romantic dreams of. I’m always wondering when we meet new people who they are going to be fated to, is it going to be anyone we know and even liked the little complication that arose concerning Alex. It was also good to see what happened when being fated isn’t a good thing and the downside of it.
<
The plot moved along quite nicely and kept me really interested, we were introduced to more players and you get a feel for where it is going to go without it being too obvious, there was a nice little side plot there that wasn’t centred around Hayden that was good too. I really like the world that’s created and although we get answers, I also have questions that I hope get addressed in the next book. I want to know more about the Gysps and where they come from?  What they meant by what they said? Will Hayden travel to the other continent? Will we see more of Faren? Will she have to kill Rainen? Will she become the ruler of everything?  I have lots more too so I’m really excited about the final instalment . . . . . I have a feeling it’s going to be epic.

A huge thank you to Mireille Chester for giving me the opportunity to review this book. The review for Destiny, book three in the Chosen One Series will be posted on December 6th for the blog tour.
