The Review: 4.5 stars! The Tragedy of Knowledge was an excellent ending to The Resistance Trilogy, all events have been leading to this breath-taking finale and I really liked where it went…

Following the conclusion of The Gates, Camille, Gavin and their friends start to get the ball moving for the final showdown with Gerard, further building the resistance and also searching for a way to end it all. Camille continues with her training and also continues to have visions whilst her power seems to be growing on other ways too. They are slightly lost after Gerard took away their main source of information; that is until Camille’s visions start leading her into a different direction and they gain valuable knowledge from an unlikely source. After an initial confrontation with Gerard – where he hints that Camille is something more – they are given an ultimatum, a time and a place for the ultimate showdown. So, armed with their new found knowledge and back up from both sides of the gates, they put their plan into action. Unfortunately they aren’t the only ones with a plan and what seemed straight forward … is no longer so. As Camille finds out some awful truths and makes some startling discoveries, things start to become less clear cut….. can she work out the prophecy and end the ‘frozen soul’s’ curse before it’s too late? Or will she die trying?

As I said this is an excellent ending to the trilogy. Camille really came into her own as she became an integral part of the resistance movement, even though Gavin is the spearhead, it ended up where Camille was the epeicentre and all hope lay with her. She rose to the challenge and I’m very impressed with how far her character has come from the doormat victim she was in the beginning. It was great to see her and Gavin have some quality time and be able to just love each other for a while too – I think it was needed amongst all of the upheaval but it also brought it home and made you understand just what was at stake as they ventured into what could be their doom.
The storyline was good, quite slow to begin with that gradually built and built into an action packed showdown filled with magic and multiple enemies and fights. I really liked the way the witchcraft/hoodoo played a big role in this, I enjoyed it in the last book and thought it brought something really good and different to the series – so I loved that it was continued and took a bigger role and even more so that it was linked to the prophecy. I loved how even though their ‘source’ of information was taken from them, that the information was kept coming via another source, a more supernatural source. It was really good to get to the real story of the how and why Amaranth was created, the circumstances surrounding it and Gerard and Samira’s story. But believe me, nothing is as it seems, expect a couple of surprises along the way and plenty of action as the resistance literally fight for their existence. I felt everything was tied up nicely by the end and I was left feeling satisfied….. However, I personally would have liked a different ending – not that I didn’t like it…..but…..well, read it and see if you feel the same.

 “All right. Look,” he said. “I’m going to come at you again from the same angle—when you’re not expecting it—and I want you to deflect my strike this time. All it takes is one stab of this silver, and you’re instantly slowed down, do you understand? It can mean the difference between living and dying. One strike will make it easier for your attacker to land another strike, and then another. Each one making you weaker. Which means seconds until you’re completely incapacitated. Then they can do whatever the hell they want to you. Think of it as paralyzing venom.”

“Gavin. I got it. We’ve been over this.” I pulled my hair tighter in the ponytail and wrapped it with an elastic tie, positioning myself in front of him again, knees bent, arms up, stance ready.

“Then get it together. I need you focused.”

“Did I mention I really don’t like your bossy side?”

“Did I mention I really hate that you don’t do as you’re told?”

He met my stance with an amused grin, rubbing his hands over his shoulders to push up his sleeves. My gaze caught the movement, zoning in on his defined arms. I swallowed, and managed, “Do as I’m told?”

“Uh huh.” He shuffled closer with slow, easy steps. “Out here, I’m not your husband. I’m not your lover. I’m your trainer. It’s my responsibility to show you how to defend yourself. And it’s your job to listen.”

“I am listening. You just make it difficult … to stay focused.”

“Oh, yeah?” He reached out and brushed a strand of hair from my forehead, letting his fingers trail slowly over my skin while he peered down at me, licking his lips. “Why do I make it difficult for you to stay focused, love? Are you having a hard time keeping up?” Pushing the hair back behind my ear, he leaned in farther, grazing his nose against my cheek, smirking when he heard me exhale a low, shaky breath.

Damn him. “You know why.”

“Do I?” His grin widened.

“You do. And I won’t give you the satisfaction of hearing it come out of my mouth.”

“Cam,” he dragged his lips across my cheekbone to the base of my ear, “I can feel it, too. You don’t have to say it, because I’m in tune with your body like never before. We’re on the same level now. All that pent-up energy, trying to claw its way out of you …” Nipping my earlobe, he let out a low chuckle and skimmed his hand underneath the hem of my shirt, tracing the waistband of my jeans with rough, teasing fingers. My entire body came alive at his touch, blood singing, knees quaking, mouth watering. His scent was divine and his lips called to me like some wicked, elemental magic.

He knew exactly what he was doing. The bastard.

More than willing to play along, I inhaled a sharp breath and reciprocated, dragging my fingers down his torso, then back up, stopping just above his navel. His mouth still near the base of my ear, his breath hitched against my skin at the contact. Encouraged, I headed south again, rubbing and teasing, feeling him grow beneath my fingers, tilting my head to the side to expose my neck. He moaned and grazed his teeth over my shoulder and down to my collarbone, dropping his blade to the ground with a loud thud.

“You make me crazy. Do you know that?” He gripped my hips and pressed me against him. “Do you feel what you do to me?”

“It’s too intense,” I whispered, my voice breathy. I was already panting when he moved to the other side of my neck, nudging my head to tilt it in the opposite direction.

“I warned you. You had a taste back in Amaranth, right after you changed.” He started on the buttons of my shirt.

“But the pull is even harder to fight now. When you touch me … I have no self-restraint. Sometimes I feel like … like I can’t handle all the extra energy. Like I’ll detonate if I don’t act.”

“That’s part of the fun.”

“Gav … we’re in an open field.”

“Hasn’t stopped you yet.” He popped two more buttons. “I know you want me. Just relax and let me make you feel good, baby. That panic lessens when you give it an outlet.”

Shutting my eyes tight, I leaned up on tiptoe and wrapped my arms around his neck to kiss him hard, then released him and slowly sashayed in the other direction, challenging him from underneath coy lashes, the need to run singing in my veins. “Fine. And I know you want me, but you’ll have to catch me first.”

His mouth fell open and his brows raised, a surprised smile pulling at the corner of his lips; he was ready to take the bait. I surged forward into a turbo-charged sprint, clear across the field toward the woods ahead, feeling him feet behind me, fast on my trail. I blew through the edge of the brush and into the thick marsh, lifting off my feet into flight, deeper and deeper into the bayou.

The Review: In this 2nd book in The Resistance Trilogy we find Gavin and Camille still in Paris a couple of weeks following the revelations with Arianna and together they get the resistances’ wheels in motion. They aren’t the only ones who want Amaranths’ queen -Samira gone and they come up with a plan of action which also brings Camille to the attention of a certain someone from Gavins’ past who brings out her insecurities. Never the less, they come up with a plan that sees them split into two groups or two waves as it were to gain freedom for Amaranth by killing Samira and hopefully freedom from their curse. Gavin and Camille are among the first wave to enter the haven in preparation for the next portal opening on the crescent moon when the others will bring the battle to the gates, what they don’t count on is that everything and everyone may not be as they seem and some harsh decisions and drastic actions are going to be needed if they want to make it out of there alive. But as secrets and lies are revealed and each side plays their hand, who will come out on top? Or has Gavin and Camille’s luck finally run out?

Now that’s what I’m talking about! This is a really good step up from book 1 (which I rated 3*s) and it’s great to see the progression of not only the characters but the plot too. In book one I didn’t really feel connected to Gavin & Camille and I wanted more from them emotionally and in their relationship and boy did we get it here. I was dragged into their relationship and felt everything they were going through – good and bad. There were sweet & wonderful times but also heart breaking times for them as they try to maintain a relationship whilst organising an army, trying to avoid the attention of the queen and awaiting the planned invasion. Their love though, really shone through in this and made me believe in them. Another character that got better for me was Audrey, I lost track of the amount of times I truly laughed out loud at her humour. She was hilarious and provided a nice lift to an otherwise serious situation and I really appreciate her for that, I only wish she had a bigger role, maybe some powers – yeah that would be awesome along with her wit.

As I said the plot/storyline progressed well too, once they had returned to Amaranth and I kept reading, I was always aware of the danger they were in. always thinking that with each page they were going to be found out or worse. I really wanted to hurt one of the characters which shows how much it affected me and I kept turning the pages even though I kept thinking something was going to go wrong. It really kept me on my toes with the twists and turns and just when you thought it was going one way, it went another so you didn’t know what was going to come next and the pacing was great too. I liked that we saw a bit more of the Hoodoo being used and hope we are going to see more of that, I also like the skeletons in the closet that burst from nowhere, leaving me open mouthed. 


The events in this book and the epilogue have really left me really wanting book 3 which is on my TBR list right now. So Ms Wade, if you can bump my opinion from a 3 star for book 1 and a 4 star for book 2 does that mean the final book is going to be a 5 star? I really hope so, the game was upped here and I liked it, it surprised me so please feel free to surprise me some more in the finale -The Tragedy of Knowledge – earmarked for October 2012.

Meet the Characters of Amaranth by Rachael Wade

An interview with Camille and Joel

Camille Hart, a local St. Martinville resident and LSU literature student recently had the opportunity to sit down with Joel, a fellow band mate and friend of Gavin Devereaux (a life-long resident of New Iberia and local musician) to interview him about their latest charity album collaboration. The interview will be featured in the music section of the upcoming issue of LSU’s publication, The Daily Reveille. The following are her observations and her account.

Joel’s in town from London to play with Gavin at Cafe Des Amis, so he agreed to meet me at my place for the interview. He strolled right into my house and popped on a Johnny Cash record, lit up a smoke and plopped his guitar over his lap. He seems relaxed in his skin, warm, and has all kinds of interesting tattoos. I could get used to having this guy around. His smile and easygoing attitude are infectious. I sit down next to him with my journal and coffee, feeling like I’m meeting with a long lost friend. I offer him some coffee—he declines—and start the interview.

How was it working with Gavin on this album? He’s a self-admitted recluse, but he seems in his element when it comes to music, pretty social in the local scene. How long have you two played together?

It was hell, princess. Gavin’s my mate and all, but he can be bossy when it comes to writing and recording our tunes. I gotta give it to him, though—he takes his music seriously. But don’t let his shy exterior fool you. He can be a slave driver when it comes to putting an album together. We’ve been playing together long before your time, hon. (winks, smiles) For ages, really...

The name’s Camille...

Sorry, hon. (takes another drag off his cigarette) Uptight much?

Excuse me? No, just...let’s get back to the interview...

Take it away, princess.

Camille. The name’s Camille. Anyway, so how did you and Gavin go about collaborating on the album? And how do you feel about the Duval Foundation and all the different charities he’s decided to donate the proceeds to? Did you have any say in that?

Yeah, I did. I chose a few charities to add to the foundation’s list, one in particular that helps fund and support worldwide literacy efforts, and another that helps homeless youth just outside of London. But he chose most of the organizations and I support his selection 100%. As for getting together to work on the album, Gavin and another friend of ours, Gabe, called me up and wanted to see if I’d be interested in playing guitar for a couple of tracks. I told them I was in and the album was done a few months later. I’m happy to be a part of it.

So, it sounds like you’re all good friends and had fun working on this together. You live in London, but will you be playing live with Gavin and Gabe here in Louisiana the night of the release party?

As it stands, you can count on me being here. It’s only a hop across the Atlantic, so I’m happy to make it and help out. Gavin and Gabe are like brothers to me, and I wouldn’t miss.

That’s a big hop. Well, I’m sure it means a lot to Gavin. I interviewed him the other day and he spoke so highly of you. He mentioned you love to read. Do you draw any musical inspiration from your favorite books?

Oh, he spoke highly of you too...think someone has a little crush on you, princess. (chuckles) Yeah, music and reading are a way of life for me. I studied literature, too, just like you. Speaking of...nice collection you have going over here (glances around at my living room bookshelves, stumbles off into thought). Mine would put yours to shame, though. If you’re ever in London, you’ll have to stop by my flat and see for yourself. (stands and walks to a shelf, starts grumbling under his breath about my British literature collection)

Uh—a crush? On me? Um...never mind...so I only have a few more questions for you...

Don’t you work at a bookstore?

Yes, I do...

Well, we need to make some additions to your collection, here. Come on. (grabs his leather jacket and pack of smokes and heads toward the door)

But what about the interview? It won’t take me long to finish my questions.

You look like you need a break from all of this school work. Come on, a few hours won’t kill ya. (slips on his shades and arches an eyebrow at me, holds the front door open) Besides, I think Gavin would love to meet up with us. He’s been talking about you nonstop since you interviewed him. (waggles his eyebrows, gives me a mischievous grin)

Gave in and headed to the bookstore with him. Resumed the interview later that night back at my place. He insisted on cooking me dinner while I finished the questioning, complaining he never has anyone to cook for back in London. He wore my floral apron while he basted the chicken—that was a sight. He also offered me a free flight to London when I told him I couldn’t afford an airline ticket anytime soon. Will be taking him up on that.

Welcome Rachael! Thank you for doing our interview today, its great having you here. So, lets get on with the questions.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself:

I live in Orlando but my heart belongs to the Pacific Northwest. I’ll get there soon enough. I live with my equally movie-obsessed, witty husband, 2 cats, and a crazy black lab retriever. I’m an animal lover, have a serious case of wanderlust, and am obsessed with indie films and music. Freelance writer by day, novelist and poet by night. Not a bad life.

When did you first starting writing:

I’ve been writing since I was a kid. I started off writing what I thought were “scripts” for movies, and began submitting stories to publishers in 2^nd grade. I would get really nice responses, actually, encouraging me to keep writing as I got older. I also sing and have recorded music and played in bars and stuff, so I grew up writing song lyrics and lots and lots of poetry. My English teachers in high school and college pulled me aside and recommended I take writing seriously as a career but I never thought I could actually write for a living, never listened to them. I was so artistically frustrated and finally figured out that it was something I had to do or I’d go crazy. So, I’ve been writing since I can remember, but finally decided to make it my career just within the past few years.

How did you choose the genre you write in:

It was just a no-brainer for me. I’ve always loved vampire mythology and everything supernatural, and then romance and drama are what I love more than anything. The paranormal romance and fantasy genres involve everything I love: romance, lots of drama, imaginary worlds, and mysterious, creepy characters. I love dark, epic stories with fantastical elements. This genre lets me embrace that drama and gives me the opportunity to be a poet, so it just suits my personality and writing style really well.

How did you come up with the title:

I already had the concept of the exile city in mind, so when I began working on the plot and started fleshing out the storyline, I wanted a name that was ethereal sounding and that was relevant to some of the themes that ran throughout the story. I was thinking timeless, imaginary, everlasting, unfading...and then stumbled across the various meanings of Amaranth. When I began writing, the name just really embodied the feel of the city and the plans I had for it.

Where do you get your ideas from:

By soaking up influences from loads of music and movies. I watch tons of indie films and listen to a lot of music while I write and brainstorm. It’s a requirement for me. I’m a very visual person, so I write everything as I see it in scenes. The scenes come when I listen to music, so I listen to a lot of big sounds, a lot of dramatic music: opera, classical, heavy rock. Florence and the Machine is my biggest musical influence, and I’m inspired by Tim Burton. He’s a visual storytelling-genius and his style really inspires me.

What was your favourite chapter (or part) to write and why:

I loved writing the Amaranth chapter, which is told from Gavin’s POV. It’s my favorite because I loved writing about Samira, liked introducing her character. I also had fun with the bayou scene when Camille visits by herself. Writing it was like going down the rabbit hole for me. An Alice in Wonderland moment.

How did you come up with the names of your characters and who is your favourite: 

I couldn’t picture the main character being anyone but Camille Hart. Her name just came to me and it just worked. I also chose some French names. I study French and so I read a lot of history and origins behind some of the names, like Gavin’s last name and Vivienne, the Hoodoo woman. My favorite character also happens to be my favorite character name—Samira. She’s elegant, exotic, and deadly. She was actually inspired by a favorite French teacher of mine whose name was Samira.

Can you tell us about any upcoming projects: 

The 2^nd book of The Resistance Trilogy will be out around the New Year, so I’m working on book 2 and 3 at the moment. I’m also working on another fantasy romance novel that involves both fallen angels and vampires, and I have a literary novel in the works, which is completely unrelated to the fantasy and romance genre.

The Review: “I’m completely crazy about you, Camille.” He moved in closer, his eyes assessed my reaction. “―I know there are details you didn’t want to mention before ... things about the guy you left back in Seattle, and your mom. But I want you to know whatever it is you’re still running from, you don‘t have to run from it anymore. You can talk to me. And I would never, ever, hurt you.”

3.5 out of 5! I’d wanted to read Amaranth for a while so I was thrilled when Rachael Wade gave me a copy to review. Firstly, the cover is what initially attracted me to the book; take a look, isn’t it lovely? Then secondly after reading the blurb, I though vampires and hoodoo? That must be interesting. And now after reading the book, overall I generally liked it.

Camille is a 21 year old girl who travels to Paris in order to get away from her abusive ex-boyfriend. While in Paris she meets handsome and charming Gavin who she feels an instant attraction to but their meeting is quiet brief. After travelling around Paris, two years have passed and Camille has been living in Louisiana. She’s dated another abusive boyfriend who is currently her ex but he’s still trying to get her back. It’s then when is she working that she meets Gavin again and she is suddenly taken on a whirlwind of a relationship and she starts finding out things that she never thought possible existed.

I really did enjoy this book. It was definitely one I was looking forward to starting and I’m definitely looking forward to seeing where the author now takes the rest of the series. From chapter one, I was taken on an enjoyable journey where I was intrigued to discover more of the world that Rachael has created. It was imaginable, realistic and the storyline is quiet unique. The characters were loveable and although I struggled to connect with Camille as much as I did with Gavin, I still really enjoyed how much their relationship developed. I loved how Gavin was so shy at times and came across quiet vulnerable too. The secondary characters were second to none, with Joel being one of my favourites. His sense of humour was amazing and I don’t think this book would have been the same without him. He definitely was a fantastic addition to this story.

The story line itself had quite a few laughs but also had a few sad times, so there was a good mix of emotions used. It was also full of excitement, romance and suspense. By the end of the book, the story has been left open in quite a few areas making us readers wanting more and boy, do I want more. Rachael has done a great job with Amaranth and I for one will look forward to reading future books by her.
