Tybolt’s a Deviant, a hated race immune to direct magic in a world where Wizards ensure survival. But when he loses his entire family to a spell-made storm he joins an elite group of Wizard hunters, organized beneath the new non-magic wielding king.

Now eighteen, he spends his days capturing Wizards. But the nights are his, reserved to feed the starving villagers of Eriroc under cover of dark. There’s always more people in need than he can help, and one of these days he’s going to hang for theft from the royal kitchens.

Although Tybolt and his fierce partner, Auriella, have imprisoned many Wizards, the one partially responsible for the storm that killed Tybolt’s family is still out there: Alistair. When an old informant claims to have information regarding their elusive prey, everything changes.

In a cruel twist, Tybolt realizes he isn't who he thought he was at all. How can he save himself, the people, and those he loves while keeping his secrets safe? Can he hide his true nature and allow the corrupt king to remain on the throne?

Or will he have to unveil himself and risk possible execution to save them all?

The review
The Wizard’s Heir is a new offering from Devri Walls – author of the amazing Solus Series – so I was expecting big things from this…….. and I was not disappointed!
I love a good fantasy read and this was definitely up there with my favourites. We have a young boy who witnesses his mother and sister dying caused by a storm that not only decimated the land but was wizard made. A strange man takes him from the only home he had and deposits him in the care of wizard hunters who train him to capture any wizard he comes across. Following the ‘fracture’ things have become bleak for the residents or Eriroc, food is scarce, poverty is rife and a now 18yr old Tybolt is thankfully more fortunate than others, he shares his fortune though, with the people who have nothing; buying some vegetables for a child caught stealing food, helping a mother with a few children…. The list goes on as he does all this selflessly.
The wizard who started the storm is in a dungeon deep beneath the city but there is one who has always eluded the hunters and Tybolt would like nothing more than to get his hands on him as one of the few he deems responsible for the death of his family. With the help of Auriella -his partner in hunting- he gains information that could lead him to Alistair. The thing is, what do you do when everything you have ever known about yourself becomes lies, when the woman you love is taken from you and instead of the hunter….you become the hunted?
So, this was really good! I love this author and she knows how to write fantasy - believe me. Tybolt is the kind of character that you feel for immediately, we witness his family falling apart and the way it was done really pulls on those heartstrings. He turns into a fine young man and someone that is very admirable to those around him. Romance comes by the way of his crush on his partner Auriella, we can see they are made for each other but as it always goes in books…. They need to realise it themselves. Auriella was a very good match for him, I love a kick ass heroine and this is what we get from her but whilst she is hard on the outside, she does show a vulnerable side also.
The storyline has it all - in my opinion – we have awesome characters, great world set up and so easy to read. I loved the hidden heritage of Tybolt, it was a major part of the story and really kept things interesting because once discovered, it turned everything on its head. I also like a story that has a thin line between the good and the bad, where a little twist here and there can change a viewpoint and give something else. I really liked how the magic was used in this, obviously everyone thinks it’s the source of all evil but it’s a matter of perspective. We get a lot of action by way of wizard hunting, bullying, kidnapping, extortion, magic, chases on horseback and all out anarchy! Which makes for a super exciting read. The pacing was perfect and I found it really hard to put down. This definitely seemed like a stand alone book because everything is sewn up really well for a very satisfying ending.

Thank you to Devri Walls for giving me the opportunity to review this book in exchange for an honest review.

Kiora thought she had never heard a lie until she was sixteen. But she was wrong. Her entire existence was based on nothing but. She thought that evil did not exist. Lie. That magic was not real. Lie. And that the land of Meros was all there was. One more lie.

With Aleric telling her that evil is knocking on the door and that she is the only one who can stop them she has a choice to make. Refuse, or start the wildest most painful ride of her life.
She reluctantly dips her toe into her new existence of magic and threads, dragons and shapeshifters, and the person who wants to take control of it all: the evil Dralazar.

However, this journey was never meant to be hers alone. She will be accompanied by a Protector. To her disbelief, and utter irritation they name the hotheaded, stubborn, non -magical, (albeit gorgeous) Prince Emane. They will have to trust each other with their lives, but right now Kiora would settle for a non hostile conversation.

And now it comes down to this, If you had never heard a lie, would you know when you heard one? Is knowing good from evil innate? Kiora finds herself having to decide who lives and who dies on those very questions.

Excerpt from Wings of Arian

Emane came to her after dinner with two swords and handed her one.
“What is this for?” she asked as the weight of the sword jerked her arm to the ground.
“I have decided you need to learn how to fight,” he said, laying his blade across his hand, examining it.
“You have, have you?” She grunted trying to wrench the sword back up.
“Well, Aleric and I decided.” Emane shrugged, dropping the sword back to his side. “If I do get separated from you and you happen to run out of magic, you need to be able to defend yourself. I have already spoken to the Guardians and they have promised to make you a sword that is your size. But for now, we will practice with these.”
“Emane, I don't even know how to hold one of these things.”
“Lesson number one, it is called a sword.”
“Alright, a sword,” she said placing a hand on her hip. “Problem number two, I can’t lift it.”
“Try,” he said jerking his head towards her sword.
Rolling her eyes she grabbed the hilt, struggling under the weight of it, managing to pull it up a few inches before the weight dragged her back down to the ground. Emane burst out into laughter, taking it out of her hands.
“Well worth it!” he grinned, shouldering her sword. When she looked at him confused, Emane leaned forward as if telling her a secret, “I really just wanted to watch you not be able to do something.”
“Are you serious,” she sputtered. “You gave me that sword just to laugh at me? Did you even talk to Aleric?" Her face flushed.
“Of course I talked to Aleric.” Emane was trying to stifle his laughter but it wasn't working. “And I am going to teach you to fight.” He buried the swords into the ground so that they were standing straight up. “But we normally don't start with those. He pulled out two wooden swords he had stashed behind a tree. “Normally we start training with these,” he said, spinning them around in an arc before presenting her with the much smaller, much lighter wooden sword.
She snatched it out of his hand. “You really are a jerk you know.”
“Hmmm,” he said smirking, tossing his sword from one hand to the other. “I'm happy with jerk. It’s much nicer than what you used to call me.”
“You're that too,” she half grinned.
“Nope, we have downgraded to jerk and I am keeping it.” He started circling around her. “First things first, you need to protect yourself. I will try to get past your guard. If you block me, you win. If I get past your guard, I win. And,” he drug out, “I will expect to be paid with a kiss.”
“What do I get if I win?” she asked.
Emane took advantage of the question and jabbed in quickly, connecting with her arm. “One kiss for me,” he winked, backing out again.
“That was cheating!” she objected. Emane swung around the blade, lightly connecting the flat side of the sword between her shoulder blades.
“Two kisses for me.”
“Oohhh,” she growled. “You are an arrogant horse’s ass!” She took a protective stance and blocked the next blow.
“Nice job.” He danced around her and connected with her opposite shoulder. “Three kisses for the horse’s ass,” he gloated. “Come on, Kiora you have to move your feet.” His eyes glinted mischievously.
She started to move and circle, following his lead. She blocked blow after blow, but missed at least one out of every three. “Come on, Emane,” she complained, “take it easy on me. It’s my first day.”
“I am taking it easy on you,” he laughed. “You’re terrible!”
“Thanks a lot,” she said trying to force a glare at him. “You’re not exactly encouraging.” She lifted her sword to block another shot.
Pushing his sword down over hers he leaned in, “I actually like the fact that you’re terrible, more kisses for me.”
Kiora heard a few snickers from behind her and noticed that the camp was turning up to watch the training session. Pushing back, Emane jabbed in and caught her in the stomach.
“Hey!” she yelled, doubling over.
“That’s at least 15 kisses, I am losing count.” Spinning in a wide lazy circle he asked the spectators, “Anyone want to keep track for me?”
“You… are such a ...”
“Uh uh,” he said shaking his finger at her, “we have little ears amongst us, watch your language.”
“Jerk!” she yelled.
“That’s better.” Emane swung again and she soundly blocked. It went on like this for longer than she had wanted. The crowd cheered when she blocked a shot and they counted kisses when Emane made it past her guard. And they laughed at every joke he made, which only encouraged him on.
“Please,” she gasped. “I am dying, can’t we take a break?”
“Breaks are for girls!” He taunted her, dancing around her with the stupid, albeit gorgeous grin, plastered on his face.
“I am a girl, Emane.” He moved in to take another shot, which she barely blocked. “I mean it, Emane, I am going to cheat if we don't stop.” He raised his sword over his head. With a flick of her wrist she swept his feet out from under him. He reached for his sword, but with another flick of the wrist, the sword slid across the ground out of his reach. She dropped to her knees, putting her sword to his neck, “Do you yield?”
The crowd was in hysterics. Emane stretched his neck looking around. “How many kisses am I owed?” he shouted to the crowd.
“Seventy-two,” the answer came.
“Hmmm, seventy-two kisses,” he put both arms behind his head. “That should be enough. Yes, I yield.”
“Thank heavens!” Kiora collapsed on the ground next to Emane as the crowd cheered and laughed with approval.
Emane rolled over and leaned on his elbow, looking down at her through half open lids. “I think the Lady should pay up.” He leaned down and kissed her “One down, seventy-one more to go.” Emane jumped to his feet and offered her a hand up. “Alright folks, that’s it for today.” There were some moans and groans as the crowd dispersed.
“You are shameless, you know that?” she said, brushing off her pants.
“So you tell me.” He threw his arm over her shoulder. “Let's go get something to drink.”

Why we HEART Devri Walls!
Melanie's thoughts: So, you want to know why I love Devri Walls the author? Well, if you read her Solus series – you will know…..
The Solus series is one of the best YA fantasy series I have ever read, all you have to do is look up my reviews of those books to see how much I love them. She is one of those authors that can pull you into the worlds they create and hold you captivated from beginning to end. Her writing, the world building, the descriptions of realms, creatures, magic…. Not only pulled me in but actually make me visualise what’s happening, I remember an in air battle scene from Wings of Arian (book 1) and they were using Dragons & Pegasus as mounts and all I could think was, ‘Wow, this is amazing! It would look visually stunning as an illustration or even better, as part of a movie’, and believe me, that is rare for an author to make me think that. Not only that though, the characters are great, the storylines are epic & she blends together all of the elements I love in fantasy , which includes good versus evil, prophecy and soul mates and has brought her readers this awesome adventure which always leaves me wanting more. I’d recommend her books to anyone & I’m also curious to see what she’ll come up with next, when the Solus series is done…. I’m hoping for an adult book ;)

Kiora needs answers. Who is the Shadow? Who is Jasmine? Are they connected? And even more pressing—how can she stop the Shadow from using her dreams as a map to find them? They have escaped three times, but are living on borrowed time—and everybody knows it.

Kiora’s search will push her closer to Alcander, send her to the dragon mountain of Toopai, and lead straight back to Meros—where magic will finally return to the land of no magic. Answers will be uncovered and plans unearthed that have been waiting for thousands of years.

But with the Shadow’s forces gathering, the rebels are hurtling toward one outcome: war. Armed with knowledge and hope, Kiora is determined to change that path, but will fate allow it? Or will it teach her a hard lesson about following her own destiny?

The Review: Wings of Nestor is both breathtaking & heartbreaking as we join Kiora, Emane & Alcander for the penultimate book of the Solus series.

As the synopsis tells us ‘Kiora needs answers’ and now, more so than ever with her every move being discovered by ‘the Shadow’ who constantly finds Kiora through her dreams and knows just where & when to strike, so when Kiora discovers how she is being tracked, she is forced to take drastic action to keep them safe which will have far reaching consequences for more than one of our characters. Kiora’s perils do not end there as she is forced to put herself in more danger in the effort to gain information about the shadow & it’s connection to Jasmine and none more dangerous than a trip to Toopai to see the dragon queen, the oldest known creature in the world who may be able to help Kiora put the pieces together…. That’s if she survives the journey out there for as we all know, Dragons are not the most tolerable creatures and have been known to burn first, no need to ask questions later. On her travels she will make many discoveries, see first-hand just what the enemy is up to and come to understand just how far reaching the prophecy had been & that the seeds of her arrival were planted long before anyone knew…. But will it be enough to save them all and avert the coming war?

I adored this instalment of the ‘Solus’ series, it was always a given that I was going to love this book, just the same as I have loved the 2 that came before it because I am invested in this world, it’s characters and their fates and Devri Walls creates a beautiful fantasy world that will suck you in and take you on the most awesome, epic adventure. This book could definitely be classed as the reconnaissance book of the series so be prepared to gain a huge insight into what’s going on. Kiora’s character has again progressed into a more mature person, making decisions & taking risks more freely, you can definitely see the leader in her emerging and totally feel her character preparing for what’s to come in every move & every decision she makes and I’ll be looking forward to seeing her reach her full potential in the final book. In the last book I was torn between Kiora’s love interests, I still am… I do like what happened here but I’m saddened just the same (you’ll understand when you read it) both Emane & Alcander are great in their own way so I was really feeling Kiora’s dilemma and I have to say that it made me connect to the characters on another level too, I already stated that I’m not a fan of love triangles but something about how this is put across just adds to Kiora’s trials & growth as a young woman.

The storyline is as always, full of information, action, battles, adventure & excitement! it’s putting pieces into place, it’s drawing the line between friend & foe, it’s realising people’s intentions & potential, it’s understanding just what’s at stake, understanding the lengths & depths some will go to in the name of power and not just putting your life on the line… but your heart too. I thought this book was both breathtaking & heartbreaking, definitely the saddest of the series, especially towards the end and when some realisations are made. Breathtaking because there is always something new to be seen and discovered, awe inspiring scenery from buried underground temples & magically hidden houses to volcanic caves, covered in crystals & housing dragons, from those beautiful, colourful dragons, winged horses, shape shifting beings to tiny magical bugs holding huge secrets… truly amazing! & Heartbreaking….. well, I’ll let you discover why but you will be left in no doubt as to what is at stake and why Kiora fights against all that is evil. I personally cannot wait for the last book – Wings of Lomay – and what promises to be the EPIC final instalment of the Solus series.
Excerpt of Wings of Nestor.

EMANE PACED BACK AND forth in the camp. “Why would she need him and not me?”

Drustan grunted, his head on the ground, eyes closed, tail snaking very close to the fire.
“Emane, go to sleep. I beg of you.”

“Would you like to tell me what is going on?” Emane demanded.
One yellow eye flicked open. “What are you talking about?”
“Ever since you rescued me, Kiora has been acting strangely.” Emane’s fingers itched to grab a sword, or a dagger, or something.
Drustan rolled his head in Emane’s direction. “To be fair,” he said dryly, “since we rescued you, we have been chased, and almost killed, by the most deadly thing in the land. Twice. There has not been much time for chitchat.”
“I know that!” Emane snapped. “But she has barely looked at me, talked to me, or touched me. Something’s different.”
Alcander stumbled into the barrier, clutching Kiora in his arms. His head was down, his white hair obscuring his face.
Emane ran to him. “What did you do to her?”
Alcander just grunted, taking a few more steps before falling to his knees. “Alcander! Here, give her to me.” Emane knelt down to take Kiora out of his arms.

“No!” Alcander growled, pulling Kiora tighter.

Emane jerked back his hand before being seized with anger. “What is wrong with her?”

Kiora’s head lolled back. Her eyes were closed, her face relaxed and peaceful. Alcander’s face was deathly white, beads of sweat dotted his nose, and his pupils were constricted.
“I said no.” His voice was tight and thin. “She is dumping a lot of magic—she will hurt you.”
Drustan lumbered to his feet. “It looks like she is hurting you. Set her down.”
Alcander forced himself back up. He stumbled over to Kiora’s sleeping pad. Nearly falling again, he deposited her as gently as he could before pulling a blanket over her.
“It’s all right,” Alcander breathed. “We fixed it. The Shadow can’t find us.” He wobbled before collapsing next to her.

Kiora needs answers. Who is the Shadow? Who is Jasmine? Are they connected? And even more pressing: how can she stop Shadow from using Kiora’s dreams as a map to find them? They have escaped three times, but are living on borrowed time—and everybody knows it.
Her search for help will push her closer to Alcander, send her to the dragon mountain of Toopai, and straight back to Meros—where magic will finally return to the land of no magic. Answers will be uncovered and plans unearthed that have been waiting for thousands of years.
But with the Shadow’s forces gathering, it looks like the land’s path is hurtling towards one outcome: war with the Shadow and death to all rebels. Armed with knowledge and hope, Kiora is determined to change that path. But will fate allow it? Or will it deal her a hard lesson about following ones own destiny?

Kiora is rapidly learning that evil and lies come in shades of black and white and swirling greys, but nothing could have prepared her for the shock of leaving Meros.
Kiora and her protector Emane step through the pass into a world they never knew existed but were always meant to save, only to find it far worse than they could have ever imagined. Good has been forced into hiding for its own survival, while the rest of the land bows to the Shadow, a force that pushes any remaining thoughts of Dralazar from Kiora’s mind. This land is full of new creatures, each more dangerous than the last. Her visions have taken on a deadly twist, and magic, or what comes of it, was never so real. And then there is Alcander: a Tavean, their guide, and an entirely different kind of trouble.

The Review: Wings of Tavea is an equally stunning sequel to Wings of Arian. I adore the world the author has created, the characters, the species, the creatures, the places, the prophecy – just everything! The synopsis says it all as Kiora, Emane & Drustan head through the gates to fulfil the prophecy of the Solus but upon arrival, they find that the damage that has been done since the gates were sealed is immense. No longer the world that Drustan remembers, they must navigate through the unfamiliar surroundings in search of Lomay, the seer of the prophecies, hoping he will know where their future lies….. but things aren’t always straight forward as they encounter creatures  who don’t always mean well and realise just what a hostile environment is awaiting them. Enter Alcander, a Tavean native with some secrets of his own who must guide our threesome through the hostile area – he’s arrogant and does nothing but heap disdain on them…. So why does Kiora feel so connected to him? Only time will tell as the Solus is put through more trials that she might just not be able to cope with especially when she is faced with many life or death decisions, she needs to learn her magic fast again as Dralazar becomes the least of her worries.

As I said, I adore this series – Kiora is a great character and I think I like her so much because she doesn’t know it all - she hasn’t got any idea of what she is expected to do, how she is meant to achieve it, anything – all she knows is that she is the Solus and people are relying on her to save them and she will try her hardest, with everything she has, to do the right thing for them. She’s selfless, she is the epitome of brave and a very admirable character. In book one, I loved the romance between her and Emane – such a sweet slow burning thing that kindled over time until they were in love, they were perfect for each other but then we get Alcander and to be honest – I’m torn. Whilst I love Emane, he has his limitations and he relies on Kiora to protect him just as much as he protects Kiora but Alcander is everything Emane should be for her and she feels connected to him…. I’m not a huge fan of love triangles but I did appreciate this and the fact that they clashed – a lot! Alcander seems a lot like what Emane was in book one – arrogant, cocky and thinks he knows it all – but that’s what endears him to the reader.

The storyline was an excellent progression, book one left off where they were headed through the gates and that’s where we picked straight up. I was amazed by the world & creatures in book one and that definitely continues in this – I love this genre for that, the ability of an author to create these fantasy worlds and everything that inhabits them just astounds me and I wished I had that type of imagination, the type Devri Walls has to create this world from nothing and to make it so believable, it would be visually stunning to see & it’s a shame the books don’t come with illustrations. I like how the danger takes on a different turn and even though Dralazar follows, he becomes the lesser of the danger she now has to face. I always thought Kiora was to be the saviour of Meros but once things get rolling in this book, you will see the work that lies ahead of her. It brings the history of the world as a whole to the forefront so that you’re getting a two for one story as events in the past influence the events yet to happen. This is what I love about books with prophecies, I love reading of them unravelling and I like how it’s done in this, through Kiora as we get her glimpses into the past. I like the idea of what she has to face in order to save everyone, I like who she has to face and the mystery surrounding the who & why of it. I enjoyed the romance in it and im also curious as to what the relationship dynamics will be like following the events in this because Kiora is forced to do something drastic which leaves me wondering how it will changes things. As I mentioned before, I love how Kiora is so unassuming, she still doesn’t see herself as a saviour - but of course she still hasn’t fulfilled the prophecy – you can feel it though when reading, she still has so much more to give, so much to discover about herself, more magic to learn and I have faith in her, I’m routing for her and can’t wait for the final book….. bring on ‘The Shadow’.

The Review: Wings of Arian is an epic fantasy and I loved it! 4.5 stars!
It tells the story of a world that knows no evil and hasn’t for over 1000 years, but things are stirring; evil is stirring. . . and ready to make a play to become the ultimate power.
There is also a prophecy. . . . one in which a solus will appear and defeat evil one final time. . . and evil will be no more.
In the land of Meros lives humans, and these humans are totally unaware of magic or evil – never having felt or experienced it. They live their lives in total peace ruled by a long line of kings who kept the history secret from their people. . . . Until now! Now the search begins for the ‘Solus’ for it is of the utmost importance that the Solus be found and trained before it’s too late.  They do find the Solus – and it’s the most unlikely person ever – and with that discovery comes the Protector (the Solus’ loyal guard) which in turn is a big surprise. Can they come together to save the world from evil? Can they make it through the discoveries they will make and the knowledge that the world isn’t what they once thought it was?
Wow! That’s all I want to say. . .
I love these kind of books – true epic fantasy – and you can tell a lot of work went into bringing this to life, the world the author has created is just wonderful. It’s filled with all kinds of different creatures, places, filled with magic, history, prophecy and right in the middle of it is the unsuspecting humans. The characters are all great, likable and well written. Obviously the emphasis is on Kiora and Emane as the Solus and protector, we see them through everything – the discovery of who they are, their training to become who they need to be, we watch them evolve from their naïve, sheltered lives to the harsh reality of what is upon them and this is when we truly ’get’ their characters. Plus we get a little bit of love- a nice, slow burning, creeping up on you kind of love – just perfect. I loved reading about them, seeing them develop, they go through huge amounts in this and we are left with the promise of more. Other characters of note include Aleric – their trainer/teacher and Eleana – an all knowing woman with unseen powers, mysterious and beautiful who are both great too but then we get a whole host of wonderful creatures like – shape shifters, Pegasus & flying dragons to name but a few and it was all just wow!
The storyline was great, my kind of book and one of my favourite genres. I love prophecies (I’m sure I’ve mentioned before) and reading them playing out, I love fantastical worlds filled with awesomeness, fantasy creatures and things beyond my imagination. I love good vs evil scenarios and of course I love a good dose of romance and this had it all – ticking all my boxes, the pacing was great too. I have been saying this a lot lately but this is another movie worthy book that would be visually stunning, the in-air fight scenes for sure and I would definitely go to see it just as I will definitely be reading the rest of the series to which this book is an excellent start.
