The Blurb from Goodreads: When her home is attacked by murderous vampires, 17 year-old-Alexa is forced to leave her mother for dead in order to save her sister. She soon learns that she is the last known member of an elite race of supernatural Warriors, and is thrust into a world full of vampire and werewolves who all seem to regard her as some sort of saviour. Meanwhile, Alexa battles a monster within herself that seeks to gain control; a monster that seeks blood. The hidden city she finds herself in appears perfect, but Alexa's instincts tell her that all is not right within its walls. When she is asked to attend a school of fighters, whose exams consist of gladiator-style competitions, she must decide who she can trust among the smiling faces. And, when she meets Kayden, a vampire she feels undeniably drawn to, she must decide if she can trust herself.

The Review: WOW! Just wow. That’s all I want to say really, it sums it up perfectly. But, I suppose I must go on. . . . without spoilers. . . .. this is going to be hard. I LOVE this book, I can’t even seem to find words to tell you at the minute, My heart is still pounding from it as I write this. Believe me when I say this is seriously good and I loved every minute of it.

Hmmmm……characters. . . yes . . .
Our main character is 17 year old Alexa and she is one kick-ass chick!
A warrior, the last of her kind with no clue about her heritage until her family is attacked and she is forced to join a community that she didn’t know existed. Alexa has always known violence, having been trained every day of her life by her mother to protect her sister Nelly but she is shell shocked when she finds that the warrior community are used as entertainment and paid to fight each other, even to the death. She was always taught to use it only when absolutely necessary and never for personal gain or sport. She is so unselfish, thinking of others and wanting to protect. That to me is a true heroine, so when she sees what’s going on she starts to question it and the more she finds out, the worse she feels and it turns her into a ticking time bomb as she tries to get control of her new powers.
We have Nelly – her sister, whom Alexa is fiercely protective of, who has some secrets herself and is just as protective of Alexa. Then we have the hotties. Kayden, a warrior for the city – she’s drawn to him in more ways than one. Jackson, her best friend with a little secret but is loyal and protective of Alexa and we have Tommy, a new friend and fellow warrior trainee all different and bringing a little something as they vie for Alexas’ attention.

Now for the plot. . . .
We get a slightly different take on vampires & protectors in this with some variations of types which was interesting but not confusing, The community and the way in which the live is explained plainly so there’s no confusion there either. I did get a Slight Vampire Academy feel but that’s not a bad thing to me and as I said, a slight feel not huge. The plot was great, it was fast paced and kept moving, keeping my interest throughout as we follow Alexa on her rollercoaster journey of discovery. She learns quite a bit about herself in this book and the building blocks for the larger plot were put into place along with a nice prophecy, I’ve said it before – I’m a sucker for prophecies and I really like seeing them unfold and looking for the cryptic clues. So, if you like a kick-ass MC who gets her life turned upside down, becomes a supposed savior to a city of vampires because of a prophecy and uncovers a whole lot of secrets and lies then look no further, this book is for you.

This book has a huge following already on goodreads & praise for it seems endless, that would usually put me off a book because for me they usually don’t live up to my expectations but this is one book that definitely does live up to the hype. It made me feel the way I did when I read vampire Academy for the first time but unlucky for me that I don’t have the sequel to read right now as I did with VA, but never fear because the sequel will be out on January 31st 2012 so I will leave you all while I go pre order it because this has just become another of my must read series.
