Discussion Post (#1) - New Adult

Welcome to our FIRST discussion of the month. We decided we wanted to spice things up on the blog so starting with this month we're going to come up with a monthly discussion and post it right here for you all to view and comment your opinions. We know discussions can get heated, and we kindly ask you all to keep any nastiness to yourselves and respect the opinion of others. If for whatever reason we decide to discuss a book in general, please do try to keep  spoilers to a minimum, and if you find you need to post a spoiler, please make everyone aware at the start with ****SPOILER**** this is just  so we don't ruin it for others.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This month we have decided to discuss the new genre that seems to be growing and becoming a great genre amongst readers everywhere.......

New Adult.

For those of you who aren't familiar with New Adult. It’s in between a YA book and an Adult book. The stories will generally feature mature adults, usually in college or having just left college. They will deal with more emotional situations and they can often have more complicated relationships than a YA book. New Adult consists of mature nature when dealing with sex, it won't be as steamy as an adult or as graphic as an erotica but it most definitely is a lot sexier compared to ANY YA book you may have read.

Recently more publishers like Simon and Schuster and Penguin have started taking on more authors who write New Adult. Abbi Glines,  Nicole Williams, Steph Campbell Tammara Webber, and Jamie McGuire - to name a few, are all authors who started out self-publishing their work and now, their some of the biggest New Adult authors out there.  These gals are seriously setting a new trend and these hot publishers are jumping on board!
Grounding Quinn (Grounding Quinn, #1) Easy Crash (Crash, #1) Beautiful Disaster (Beautiful, #1)

And this is Why we HEART New Adult.

1. The sex isn't so clean
Jess: Oh yeah. That's a favourite of mine. Lol. I get why YA needs to be clean, I do, but with New Adult you actually sit there and say...wow...they did it. With YA you sometimes... just never know.
Donna: I double that oh yeah! Lol. One of my pet peeves is that YA’s sex scenes are always so frustrating and confusing and yeah I get that it’s because it’s for a younger audience but that’s why I love NA. It’s very realistic and so much more emotional!

2. We like that it's on the cusp of YA but is still gritty enough to be passed as adult too
Jess: This is a big thing. Most YA's have to tone down the gritty things, but with a new adult...it's all out there. Airing the characters dirty laundry I prefer this as it gives a better idea of the characters you're reading about.
Donna: I love that that NA authors don’t shy away from being adventurous. Even though they still have to tone down parts of the story, it’s so much more open than a YA book.

3. We like that it deals with real life issues, like disabilities, family issues etc...
Jess: This is great. It's another reason to love New adult. Being that it's riskier than a YA it can get away with going deeper and deeper into real life issues, without scaring people off
Donna: I love a good story where the main character has real life issues whether that being themselves or a family member. The issues are usually difficult and it’s interesting to see what each other will come up with.

4. We like the twists. There always seem to be great twists that leave you shocked as a reader
Jess: Ahhh the twists. Gotta love a good twist. Always come to the end, but it's the twists that make a new adult book...as well as the sex.
Donna: The twists. I gotta say I love and hate the twists. I love them because they spice the story up and the make-up sex is usually amazing but then I hate the twist because, through the whole of the story, you just know its coming. Lol

5. We love that both characters (the love interests) have some sort of dark secret, or dark issues rolling in them, like some sort of bad past that catches up
Jess: This is another great thing. It helps if the characters have a darkness hidden somewhere. It helps the reader understand why they are the way they are. It will always tend to help with character development too should there be sequels
Donna: Dark secrets are usually a bad thing because they cause so many problems in a relationship but in a story, they create so many intense scenes – usually. Characters always hold back because of their pasts and I love trying to work out what’s happened and how they can try and overcome their problems.

6. We LOVE that we get HOT covers!!!
Jess: OMG the covers. The covers are fantastic!!! I LOVE that we get half naked men on some of them...or a scruffy man trying to undo a girl’s shirt...yup. Covers are are hot!
Donna: Ha! So with Jess on that one! Usually half naked men are the best covers but recently there’s been a few hot covering with the characters kissing. I like this because it gives me a picture in my head of what each character should look like.

Some of our favourite covers are;
Breathe Into Me Fallen Too Far (Too Far, #1)

7. They're usually written in TWO pov's! We love double POV's especially getting in the guy’s head
Jess: I love double POV's, especially when we get to be in the guy’s head. It's so rare that books are written from a dudes POV, that it just makes New Adult all the better when there are two. Real feelings come out on both sides!
Donna: I’m a huge fan of alternative POV’s! They just work so well within a story and I think all authors should do this because you do get to understand both characters better rather than just one character and usually it’s the girl.

And just before we leave you, here a few books that self-published books that we'd love to see hit the shelves!
Rocked Under (Rocked #1) Hard to Love

So there's our top Why We Heart New Adult.  What do you think? Do you agree with us or  is there something we've forgotten? Leave your thoughts below.

I'm not sure if I'm sold on the New Adult thing. I'm not entirely sure why though, lol. I haven't finished Beautiful Disaster, the chick annoyed the hell out of me. I like all the points you have made though, so I think I may have to pick up more titles to hopefully change my mind. :)

I actually find the covers a bit off putting and think in some respects its a bit of a made up genre. I think sometimes books shouldn't be pigeonholed and you should just read whatever you enjoy. Love the idea of monthly discussions.

I am so loving the big influx of New Adult books that are being published. I agree with everything you said. I still love YA but I just feel like I can connect with NA books more because the characters would be around my own age. I haven't read too many but the ones I have read I have loved! Great post :)

I Adore the New Adult genre. I really love how these authors are able to step outside of those boundries. I love the edgy topics and the even more edgy bad boys!! I am a sucker for Bad Boys and the New Adult genre is giving me my bad boys on a silver platter! I must say I was a little skeptical when this genre was first being publisiced but now that I have had a chance to delve into some of these books, I must admit I have been sold!!

Great discussion Ladies!

I love New Adult. I'm 23 so it's so nice to be able to characters that are going through the same things as me. Relationships in your 20's are more serious than high school bc you start debating marriage, but they're different than 30's + because you're not that serious yet usually. I also love the hot covers! Those are definitely a plus ;)

I can't wait to write my first NA novel! I'll be able to swear and write in lots and lots of sexy love sex!

Are there any self published NA authors who know how to categorise New Adult? Is there a NA genre selection on KDP and Smashwords now? I assume it shouldn't be published under Juvenile Fiction, right?

I'm on the fence, i like what I have read of them, they do have hot men :) but they also have a LOT of angst which makes me nervous of reading them so I don't go out of my way to read them. I would probably just bunch them all together under the contemporary genre too. The covers are nearly always awesome though, the 'couples in clinches' are HOT!

Oh my gosh! This post is hot love on a stick, literally. Ahem. I mean, I heart this post so much and I totally love New Adult, although I look at it as more of a category, than I do a genre of its own. I have been working my butt off on a YA Crossover to NA event that I'll be hosting in June, with lots of giveaways, author interviews, reviews, and so much more. It'll definitely be featuring some of the books that you mentioned here. My goal is definitely to bring more fans into this genre/category and hope that I can somehow make them want to start reading New Adult.

I've just bought fallen too far on your recommendation and to give NA another chance as I'm not sure about the genre. Are there any British authors you could recommend? At the moment everything I'm reading seems to be American and I've had enough of sophomores and baseball/american football. ha ha!!! :)

DonnasReviews said...

Emma, I have no idea! I did just read Rocked Under by Cora Hawkes but while the main character is British, the book itself is set in America. There seems to be a lot of that around. Lol. If you do find any, please let me know. xox

DonnasReviews said...

That sounds awesome! Please send us the dets of the event hun and we'll help spread the word for you! =)

DonnasReviews said...

Get yourself off of that fence lady!! Lol. But yeah I know what you mean...it's each to their own isn't it? I know you loved Beautiful Disaster so I'm sure there would be other's you'd like if you can take the angst. =)

DonnasReviews said...

We're with you on that Harley! I'm 27 and Jess is 25 so we're kind of in the middle too, so it's nice to read something a bit hotter than YA! But yeah...I'd love to see Supernatural books in NA too! Geeeze, could you imagine something like Vampire Academy done NA? WOW! Lol

Karen Connor said...

I've read a couple of NA books and they are 'ok'. What I find frustrating is, the older the characters - ie NA and more so Adult, the more unnecessary description there seems to be. I'll try to explain. Two characters are standing facing each other and you know they're going to kiss. But does it really take 3 full pages of description to actually complete that kiss? Do I really need to know every movement of every muscle of both characters? I'm bored. Yeah i want to know theyve kissed, and yeah a bit of sexual tension is fab, but i find so many times that its way too over the top and long winded ... And boring! THIS is why I prefer reading YA even tho I'm in my 40's. :)

Mel @thedailyprophecy said...

I would love to read books about characters my age, but there is one thing that annoys me so much, that I just can't pick them up. The flawed characters with their dark secrets. Don't get me wrong, I definitely love my flawed characters! But these dark issues make them do things I can't accept and that makes it impossible for me to like the book. So I guess it's just not my thing :) I will stick to my (fantasy and thriller) adult and YA books.
